Review #1,366: Gunplay "Sniffahill: The First Gram"

Reviewed on 1.23.2014 (Review #1,366)

Today marks six years since I had a gun to me (9mm). In honor of tha moment, I will review nothin’ but Gunplay and all of his music! Gunplay got me through a lot, starting November 13, 2013, when his song, “Kush”, debuted on Music Choice: Rap. Lovin’ Gunplay’s music became a withdrawal from dealin’ with tha disappointin’, broke, anti-social underground peeps of Louisiana. Instead of makin’ them important, I’ve been makin’ Gunplay important, and I couldn’t’ve felt better about myself and what I be doin’… So, to start off tha day/Gunplay reviewz marathon, this 1st review iz for his Sniffahill: The First Gram mixtape, released back on November 18, 2008, on Maybach Music Group. I’m definitely excited to see what Gunplay brought to tha table as a 29-year-old, here!! Start Time: 10:59 AM | End Time: 11:49 AM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you use tha word “swag” frequently, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes 100,000x (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it! After I was robbed by an artist who claimed they “get money,” hearin’ about how much you “got money” and anything “money” really bothers me. If you have not done business wit me before, I won’t tolerate “money” talk in tha music!!

01. Sniffahill Intro
Ooh… >>> Okay sample/interview in tha beginning… Here comes Rick Ross; though I’m not a fan of him, at least it’s for you, Gunplay! My Rating: N/A

02. “Who Run It?”
Here we go!! >>> Ooh, some sniffin’ in tha beginning!! Wow, you sound a lil’ younger, despite this bein’ six years ago! Consistent rhymes, like always, and your flow’s pretty catchy, at times! Keep sniffin’, lol! “Keep ya whole do’ locked!” Nice outro; you almost sound like Diddy on tha outro. “You can cancel Christmas;” a threatenin’ Gunplay! My Rating: 4.4

03. “‘Bout It, ‘Bout It”
Hmm… >>> Funny how I bring up Louisiana and here you are, rappin’ off a Louisiana beat; at least this tha mid ‘90s wit Master P! Sounds pretty catchy, once again, and again, you’re consistent wit tha rhymes!! Luv tha delivery, always!! Even “ugh!!!”in’ like Master P, too, lol! My Rating: 4.5

04. “Ridin’ Thru The Ghetto” Feat. Triple C’s
Ooh, a longer joint and Triple C’s on tha feature!! Let’s see… >>> Volume’s much quieter, here… Oh, Ricky on tha hook; kinda still can’t come to realization wit his rhymes after tha CO incident, but this sounds catchy… Tha 1st verse from him ain’t too bad, either; it sounds like Florida on tha beat, so at least y’all in ya lane! Here you are on tha 2nd verse, comin’ through wit some street shit. Tha previous jointz had catchy flows, but this ain’t too bad… Here’s tha 3rd verse…; it’s either Young Breed or Torch. It’s six years ago, so tryna match tha voices up wit “Fuck Shit”’s a lil’ hard for me, at tha moment. Either way, it’s an okay verse, too. Hearin’ tha hook for tha 4th time, and Ricky sounds like Master P wit this delivery/voice. Oh, no 4th verse? Hmm…; an outro from Ross, here, and it ain’t bad, though it’s braggy, lol… My Rating: 4.0

05. “Match Me One” Feat. Torch
>>> Some sniffin’ in tha beginnin’! DJ Khaled on tha intro…; not bad… Here youa re wit tha hook; sounds catchy. Yup, gotta have tha “blunt,” as well as goin’ to Kings Park Psychiatric Center! That place’s my sanctuary; gotta luv abandoned buildings! Nice job wit tha 1st verse, comin’ through wit tha rhymes, again! Hearin’ tha hook for tha 2nd time, and it sounds like 50 Cent, almost, lol. Oh, looka here: Torch on tha 2nd verse! As soon as he started rappin’ on here, I looked at my iTunes, and I saw his name! Gotta feel his “before I got my first chain, had ta snatch me one” line! Can’t believe “my first chain”’s over 11 years old, now! That’s a #TBT moment! My Rating: 4.2

06. “Just How I’m Feelin’”
>>> You said you “like this here;” gets me anticipated and I’ono why, but it makes me wanna play Mario Kart for Super Nintendo, lol, wit tha level wit tha lava… Tha verse sounds good on this beat; you layin’ tha “rules” down! Layin’ it down wit tha outro, too… My Rating: 4.1

07. Kano Skit
Ooh, a skit! >>> Almost sounds like a Jamaican; it iz… Glad he ‘bout dem “drugs!” My Rating: N/A

08. “Trunk Of My Impala”
>>> LOL, “Pop, Lock & Drop It” beat; sounds like consistent rhymes, so you know I gotta feel ‘em! This was when you was startin’ ta get it in to tha public! Tha hook sounds catchy, too; kinda sounds like 50, but someone else, who I can’t think of, at tha moment… Almost sounds like Yo Gotti’s voice on tha outro, lol. My Rating: 4.1

09. “How You Like Me Now”
>>> You keepin’ tha catchy jointz comin’ along wit this one; nice hook! Too bad it took me five years after this ta “like [you]” and your music… Nice job wit tha 1st verse; keep layin’ dem rhymes down! Tha 2nd verse sounds good, too; keep this shit comin’! My Rating: 4.2

10. “Serve ‘Em” Feat. Torch
Anotha collab, right chea!! >>> This sounds catchier than some of tha previous shit, so far; diggin’ tha beat, includin’ tha “murda” shit you got goin’ on, throughout tha hook! Tha 1st verse sounds catchy, here; you neva stop wit deliverin’ tha rhymes!! Yes, Torch on tha 2nd verse, comin’ through like a torch! “Cashin’ checks constant;” that Triple C’s formula!! My Rating: 4.4

½time: Of course, gotta luv this shit, so far!! A 4.2 for tha CD rating, currently; gotta feel what you bringin’ to tha table!! You neva come through soft and neva hint it, either!! Keep bringin’ dat raw shit to tha table!!

11. “New Jack Hustler” Feat. Torch & Scotty Boi
Anotha collab; ooh! >>> Ooh, faster track, and you sound pretty great on this disco-rap-soundin’ shit! Tons of rhymes when tha BPM’s high! I’m diggin’ what Torch’s bringin’ to tha 2nd verse, too; “it’s Triple C’s!” Got Scotty Boi on tha 3rd verse, comin’ through wit consistent rhymes! “Mapquest,” lol! Nice way ta end this joint! My Rating: 4.3

12. “Gin & Juice”
You already know… Yup, Snoop Doggy Dogg’s track. You almost sound like Pac in tha beginning, and when you hold certain notes. However, consistent shit bein’ delivered, here; gotta dig it!! My Rating: 4.2

13. “Killswitch”
Likin’ tha title, here… >>> Of course, we sniffed our way from tha previous joint ta this joint; nice transition! You sound catchy on tha hook, here; time ta “get tha killswitch!” Feelin’ what you bringin’ to tha table on tha 1st verse, here; as always, it’s catchy! Tha 2nd verse sounds great, too! This was when you was buildin’ your reputation as—what I consider you—tha hip-hop president! A DJ Khaled outro, leadin’ to tha next joint… My Rating: 4.3

14. “One In The Head”
>>> LOL, I feel like I’m at my 1st college again, hangin’ out in tha dorms wit this ’07 joint: “Streetz On Lock” (Hot Dollar) beat! Consistent rhymes wit these “sticks and drums” you spittin’ on tha 1st verse, here!! Consistency iz on-point! “Roll a nice-ass blunt!” Thought there would be a 2nd verse, but there’s a long outro, here; feels like a nice break… And, just like ’07, “ta-ta-tatted up,” like The Alliance & Fabo! My Rating: 4.3

15. “This Is The Life (Remix)” Feat. Rick Ross, Shawty Lo, Torch, Brisco, Flo Rida, Birdman & Trey Songz
I remember this one; let’s see what it sounds like for a remix… >>> LOL, y’all left Trey Songz out of tha ID! Funny, but he on tha hook, just like before. Here’s tha 1st ½ of tha 1st verse from Shawty Lo, comin’ through wit some Ross-inspired rhymes; ehh… I gon put everyone in order, here, except Ross, since it was his song (he goes first in tha feature). LOL, I thought it was French Montana on tha 2nd ½ of tha 1st verse, but it’s you; catchy delivery/rhymes from you, as always! “Gunplay, Don Logan!” My boy Torch on tha 1st ½ of tha 2nd verse, comin’ through wit dat street shit! Everytime I hear him, I have “fuck ya blog, fuck ya opinion” and his attitude stuck in my head; gotta luv his power!! Ricky on tha 2nd ½ of tha 2nd verse, here, comin’ through wit his questionable drug shit… A long, lost soul (Brisco) on tha 1st 1/3 of tha 3rd verse… Definitely feelin’ his Opa Locka-type rhymes, though he’s stuck in a #TBT zone for me, since I really haven’t heard anything from him since, like, ’08… LOL, a pre-dance-rappin’ Flo Rida on tha 2nd 1/3 of tha 3rd verse…; tha rhymes aight, but I usually don’t take him too serious… Really, “Birthday” was all I took serious from him. “Low” was good to listen to, but no serious level for me. Then, all tha dance-rap songs are just bleh… Birdman on what’s tha 3rd 1/3 of tha 3rd verse, here; okay rhymes… This was just an okay song, originally, so it’s just an okay remix for me, overall. My Rating: 3.6

16. “Scarface Freestyle”
>>> Diggin’ tha beat you chose ta rap off of, here! Tha rhymes sound good, but tha beat’s more-addictin’! Yea, “tha streetz won’t let [you] die;” of course they won’t!! My Rating: 4.2

17. “Nann Nigga”
Looks like an oldie! >>> Sniffin’ in tha beginning! And yea, tha late ‘90s wit tha Trick Daddy/Trina beat, here! You sound good on this, too, fa 2-00-8! Sounds like your current voice; diggin’ it! My Rating: 4.0

18. “Cherish The Day”
And, anotha oldie? >>> Sounds like an original beat, and it sounds good, though I bet I’ve heard this somewhere in tha mist of ’09 – ’13… Yea, I heard Sade in tha background, here; let’s see what you got goin’ on wit tha 1st verse… Yea, some real shit wit tha “same sacrifice” and shit; good shit! Flow aight, but I can see why it aight ‘cause you got a street story ta deliver; I feel ya… And finally, Sade came through at 2:24; at least it took a while, unlike other songs with samples, where they ear-bleed you wit ‘em every few seconds! My Rating: 4.1

19. “Extra Nice”
>>> Sounds like an East Coast-kinda joint, for a start… This sounds okay; almost a lil’ mainstream wit tha vibe, but you still come through wit tha consistent rhymes! My Rating: 3.8

20. Outro
>>> Okay, Ricky Rozay on tha outro, here, wit some sniffin’ in tha background… Kinda blah, blah, blah wit tha “get money…, get money…” shit… My Rating: N/A

21. “Welcome To The Jungle”
Endin’ wit anotha sample? >>> Well, not Guns N Roses, but “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” beat, lol. Sounds catchy and consistent; diggin’ how you deliver tha rhymes and come through wit dat paranoid voice!! Only one verse fa 2:52 on tha length; a long outro, here… Sounds like a fight or somethin’, from a distance! My Rating: 4.2

Overall: This was definitely some good shit, especially fa 2008! Good shit, Don Logan!! Can’t wait ta review tha remaining CDs; I’m reviewin’ a total of nine!!!
