Review #1,147: Ricky B "The Archives Vol. 1"

Reviewed on 4.06.2012 (Review #1,147)

Time for my one and only review for today, since I have to edit early… It’s ‘90s rapper, Ricky B, and his 2011 album, The Archives Vol. 1, released on Mossberg Records/Ross Music Group. Thanx to Amazon, I purchased this album, but an interestin’ lil’ discovery brought me to this album. I was in Florida, on vacation, and Ricky B added me. When he wrote me, I wasn’t sure who he was, at first, ‘til he posted one of his songs on my wall. Tha title of a message he sent me, “Archives,” confused me ‘cause I thought it had to do wit my mixtape compilation, Tha Louisiana Archives. However, it was an album, and I’m glad I was able to buy a hard copy! Now then, lemme get to this review! Shout out ta Ricky B fa discoverin’ me, bein’ one of tha kings outta everyone I talk to! Start Time: 8:05 PM | End Time: 9:25 PM (adjusted)

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you use tha word “swag” frequently, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes 100,000x (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. “Hello”
What could we be startin’ with? >>> Hooked up wit Beat Flippa fa tha beats? Interestin’; I remember you tellin’ me about him producin’ when I showed you my documentary on my life in tha 2000s! Let’s see what we got wit this sample stuff goin’ on… Okay, once tha 1st verse kicked in, it sounds betta; nice lil’ rhymes, too, you got here. Tha 2nd verse ain’t too bad, here; lots of messages to and from tha streetz. Now, hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it sounds like a recap of New Orleans rappers; of course, I have heard all of ‘em. Keepin’ it goin’ wit a 4th verse/outro-type of verse, too… My Rating: 3.8

02. “Head Bob Slo” Feat. Issac Jarvis
Let’s see what kinda shit we on, here… >>> Sounds like some nice production, and tha hook’s some interestin’ singin’, too… Tha 1st verse sounds pretty nice, here; it’s like a 2010s Ricky B, which iz good to hear a fresh sound from you. Tha 2nd verse sounds good, too; reminds me of today, when I saw a photo booth in a bar I was at for a video shoot. I like that line: “It’s goin’ down like ya eyes when you blaze.” :tu My Rating: 4.1

03. “Shake For Ya Hood (Quickie Mart Remix)”
Old song? Or, newly made? >>> Whoa, lol @ this; sounds pretty crazy!! I remember you tellin’ me there was a dubstep remix on here of this song; thought it would be labeled! Of course, this sounds A+ fa me; gotta luv it!!! Remixed by Quickie Mart, doin’ tha damn thang! Nice way ta resurrect this song!! My Rating: 4.8

04. “Go’on Rock Wit It”
What do we got here? >>> Almost has an old feel to it, also, for a start… Clean lyrics? Mmm…; I like how you got tha bounce feel, here; thumbs up fa creatin’ anotha anthemic-soundin’ song! My Rating: 4.3

05. “I Can Feel Ya”
Keepin’ it goin’… >>> Sounds like anotha old song? Don’t see this in previous reviewz, so this iz more on tha newer side? Nice lyrics; great rhymes, includin’ how you handle err-thang on this beat! Great job on doin’ tha damn thang wit tha 1st verse’s “street” content, here! A feature on tha 2nd verse? Why aren’t they listed? *Searches on Google* I don’t see anyone listed, but good job, regardless… Tha 3rd verse sounds pretty tight fa tha streetz, too; good shit, here! My Rating: 4.4

06. “Round Wit Her”
What could this be like? >>> Nice production; sounds pretty tight, here, wit tha hook. Lol, now, uncensored lyrics? What’s up wit tha inconsistency? Should’ve had tha CD like this… Tha 1st verse’s pretty catchy wit all these street/hood lyrics; gotta luv it! Interestin’ 2nd verse, here; you really holdin’ it down fa tha ladies, but in a really catchy way, as you go wit tha beat on every line! My Rating: 4.5

07. “Back Down Memory Lane”
Lemme hear… >>> Slow start, but built tha anticipation wit tha bounce feel! This sample sounds betta than tha cheesy “Hello” one, lol! I’m really likin’ tha whole vibe here; good shit! Anotha great tribute ta those that held it down fa New Orleans, back in tha ‘90s! My Rating: 4.3

08. “This Is Real” Feat. Manny & Manny
Two Mannys? What could be this abuot? >>> Beat’s pretty nice; I can tell this sounds like a Beat Flippa sound ‘cause it sounds like his “Get In The Way (Remix)” production for Kevin Gates; good job wit tha real rhymes, too! Tha way you flow on this song sounds like some dude I would mess up, up here in PA (DJRocNRol), who’s about tha same age as you; great reference I made! Tha Manny & Manny people sound like they’re preachin’, but it sounds pretty tight, and wit a legacy, on this beat! My Rating: 4.2

09. “Nightfall”
Looks like a good title, and there’s a length of 4:37, here! >>> Ooh, a mysterious, ‘90s-soundin’ female on tha intro! Feelin’ her; I knew this was gonna be a Beat Flippa-produced track, based off some of tha background sounds! I hear you on tha 1st verse, and it’s pretty nice wit this kick-ass beat; gives me a lil’ bit of a New Orleans version of Nu$$ie feel, here! When you said, “New York interview,” I almost thought that was referenced at me; made me feel good and ironically, tonight, I will be interviewin’ you! Huh, anotha feature randomly comin’ through on tha 2nd verse? Gotta know who these people are!! This dude sounds pretty nice on this beat; good shit, reppin’ fa tha 504 pretty hard! Hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it’s pretty nice, too; good job, once again! My Rating: 4.6

10. “Where Dey At (Mix)”
Lemme hear a mix! >>> Nice start wit tha fast vibes! Anotha “Beat Flippa” beat, here? Thought it was gonna be Shonta, based off tha “Jigga Juice” growin’ sound effect I hear! Interestin’ mix goin’ on wit these beats combined; rhymes also are entertainin’ fa me, too! Rofl @ tha “do tha duck, do tha duck;” I rememba dat from DJ Jubilee “Jubilee All”!! :) Nice “huh bruh” chants, too; you really holdin’ this shit down!! Lol, almost sounds like video game music ‘round 3:17ish; feelin’ this a whole lot!! My Rating: 4.4

½time: Definitely a solid album, right chea! Glad it’s an album and not like everyone else who creates, so-called “mixtapes”, smh! You holdin’ it down wit tha production, mysterious features, and how you be creatin’ songs in tha 2010s decade in a great way!! A 4.3-rated CD, currently; thumbs up!!! I’m gradually gettin’ a headache, and am tryna hang in there ‘cause I got a radio show ta do tomorrow… I rather be in Florida, but I made dumb decisions… :(

11. “Whatuworkinwit” Feat. Manny
Looks like it gon be fun, lol. >>> Feelin’ tha uptempo vibe, once again!! You holdin’ it down wit tha hook and tha 1st verse, here; good shit! Lol @ Manny on tha 2nd verse; nice job wit tha feature! So, was that “Manny & Manny” feature just one Manny? Nice job wit you holdin’ down tha 3rd verse, too, wit this great vibe in your voice (tha flow)! My Rating: 4.4

12. “He Don’t Want It”
Looks like it gon be a gutta track! >>> Got mo of “Beat Flippa,” here; thumbs up!! Sounds like a feature on tha 1st verse? Almost sounds like a young Lil’ Cali, lol. Good job wit tha 1st verse, and tha hook’s pretty hype; tight shit here!! Sounds like someone different on tha 2nd verse, too? Good shit; Southern Cassidy, lol? Likin’ tha “asthma” part, since I have that. I hear you on tha 3rd verse, and it sounds pretty nice; really holdin’ this shit down!! My Rating: 4.5

13. “Rock Hard Bone”
Lol @ this title! More bounce fa me? >>> Sounds like a pretty tight start… Lol @ tha hook/title part; glad you got some shit fa tha X-raters! Consistency tha whole way through! Good job wit shoutin’ out “Beat Flippa;” he seems ta be holdin’ err-thang down on here!! My Rating: 4.4

14. “Who I Ride With” Feat. Manny & Manny
This double feature again? Wonder what gon come outta this? >>> Feelin’ tha hood vibe; great beat, includin’ how tha 1st verse iz handled!! Nice shit from one of tha Manny dudes on tha 2nd verse; consistent gutta shit at its finest, fa tha 504!! Nice ending part, includin’ tha line, “That’s who I blaze with.” :tu My Rating: 4.5

Intermission: It’s 9:03 PM, and I’m almost an hour into tha review. I have to lay down for a lil’ while. Whatever time I lay down for, I’m gonna take off tha time spent on tha review. I’m almost feelin’ light-headed, but why? I napped for almost three hours…; I know this senior project I’ve been helpin’ with has been a lil’ rough, as far as havin’ lights at you and lack of sleep… *Takes intermission* Okay, it’s 9:33 PM; ate a cinnamon gram cracker and had water. Then again, I took a pill to cure a headache, so I dunno if it’s kickin’ in…; lemme try and finish this off…

15. “Money Matters”
>>> I like tha lyrics in tha hook; real nice, includin’ tha intro attached to it! Ooh, an old vibe comin’ outta this; feelin’ tha beat a whole lot, too!! Damn, this gives me an early ‘00s vibe that I love!!! Real nice rhymes on tha 1st verse; you’re really holdin’ it down!! Real nice rhymes in tha 2nd verse, too; I like tha “bicycle” line, lol. Wonder what was up wit this “Lil’ Bubba” dude that you said you “killed”? Did I hear wrong? My Rating: 4.6

16. “Welcome 2 Da Hood”
Glad you always holdin’ it down fa “da hood!” >>> Feelin’ tha bounce-like sample vocals in tha backgroud (“fuckin’ right, it’s alright”), as well as tha beat and your representation! You got more representations goin’ on wit tha 2nd verse, too, as you’re shoutin’ out those holdin’ it down fa New Orleans, once again! I’m hearin’ tha 3rd verse and I’m realizin’ this joint’s 5:37; crazy, but it’s keepin’ me goin’ wit this great representation of tha 504! Lol, no 4th verse, but a minute-long ending of tha beat; nice… My Rating: 4.4

17. “Head Bob Slo (Clean)” Feat. Issac Jarvis
Lol @ tha misspellin’ of tha feature’s name on tha ID! :rofl Thought most of tha beginning of tha CD was already clean, lol. See #2 fa tha review!

18. “Get Bucked (Live)”
A live version featured on this CD? >>> Sounds pretty tight; nice and hyper, even though I thought I’d hear more of tha background crowd? Sounds pretty nice, too… My Rating: 4.3

19. “Shake For Ya Hood (Original)”
Lol, thought I was gonna see a clean version of tha dubstep-soundin’ version, but here we are wit a classic! My Current Rating: 4.5

20. “Ya’ll Holla”
Anotha oldie? >>> Ooh, I’m right wit hearin’ this! Lol @ tha preview and checkin’; sounds much betta than when I first heard it! It’s like, tha beat’s on-n-poppin’ wit tha Mardi Gras feel, as well as your anthemic rappin’!! My Current Rating: 4.4

Overall: Seemed to me that this iz a really great album fa tha 2010s decade!!! Real nice job, Ricky B!! Your consistency proved to continue, even years and years after possibly, your previous release! Nice job teamin’ up wit Beat Flippa, as well as havin’ a clique of members represent for you on tha features! Keep up tha great work and keep livin’ strong!!
