Review #1,466: Kevin Gates "Murder For Hire (Hosted by DJ Holiday)"

Reviewed on 6.10.2015 (Review #1,466)

What up? Got ya boy, FrankieThaLuckyDog here! We’re driving to Centralia, PA right now, it’s a ghost-town! Only 10 people live there, and we’re actually goin’ to get ready ta do my 1,466th review, eva! It iz Kevin Gates, straight outta Baton Rouge, LA! With Bread Winners Association—of course, major label, Atlantic, on tha signin’, too—and it’s his CD, Murder For Hire (Hosted by DJ Holiday)! There’s only seven songs on it, and so this iz why I’m gettin’ tha chance to do a live review, right now! And, so, Kevin Gates, he gon have to compete with Lil’ Boosie, but now known as Boosie Badazz, right here, because they dropped a CD on tha CD, back on May 26, two Tuesdays and a day ago! And, I got my boy, Kevin Vogrin, right here; he took tha trip to go help me out with this! It’s a pretty nice day out, 83 degrees out, it’s very sunny. We’re in Northeast PA, and I’m just very excited to be doin’ this review! Kevin Gates, he’s like a God, like, in tha music business! I mean, that’s why one of tha record labels that’s behind me discovered me through Kevin Gates ‘cause I had been bloggin’ about him since 2008, back when I was 19 years-old. And now, that I’m almost 27 years-old, this iz pretty exciting that I’m finally getting tha attention that I deserve! And so, I’m just in awe every time Kevin Gates iz on somethin’; it’s really great! Shout out ta him on tha Billboard Hot 100 charts with “I Don’t Get Tired” with August Alsina! It iz in tha Top 100 of tha Billboard charts, so he’s got a Billboard-chartin’ single, and just keeps tha street singles goin’ along! And, I’m just a big supporter; I will just continue to supportin’ him as much as I can. And, I just keep tellin’ these people, “Don’t get tired!!” You know, you gotta just stay consistent wit your immortal energy and that’s what I do with my job and everything; I just keep it goin’!! And, we are goin’ to keep this goin’! We will see you at Centralia! Start Time: 6:02 PM | End Time: 7:58 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you use tha word “swag” frequently, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. “Intro”
Leggo! >>> Definitely some nice street rhymes, right here! You goin’ off, Gates! Tha beat’s pretty nice ta rap off of! Luv bein’ in an abandoned ghost-town! This iz like an abandoned highway, right chea! Yea, “neva get tired!!” Definitely nice verse; you bein’ aggressive wit it! That’s what’s up! Yup, we all came from nothin’ and now, look at tha 2nd verse! And yup, this iz a site to see, as we got, you know, random urban explorers and visitors…! Wanna shoot a video here, Gates? Holla at me! Only $200 to edit and I shoot for like, $75 an hour! Yeah, you definitely aggressive wit it, and I’ve always appreciated dat wit you! You spit from tha heart! My Rating: 4.4

02. “Rican Johnny”
Here come tha names… >>> Huh…; I dunno about startin’ it wit “money,” though… You have very catchy vocals on this hook, right here! “Buku!” Gotta keep dat southern, Louisiana slang goin’! “Puerto Rican Johnny!” This iz definitely jammin’ to where you can bob your head to tha 1st verse; very consistent on tha beat, here! “Livin’ dat fresh life,” Gates; I feel ya! “Born wit a plug!” You know, “money” rhymes are definitely played out and wack, but when you have tha catchy vocals like this, you definitely pull through for it, ya feel me? You just got a lot ta say; that’s all I can say! Tha 2nd verse iz on-n-poppin’, too! Who doesn’t love you, Gates? Who doesn’t love you?!? It’s like, God created one of tha best rappers ever!! Sometimes, at my job, I feel like a Kevin Gates: such a leader! And, it’s just so great! Even one of my former acquaintances from my 1st college, they posted yesterday that, “You know, like Kevin Gates, ‘I don’t get tired’,” and I told them, “I been fuckin’ wit Gates since I was 19, you know, when I was still in tha college wit you,” and some of them laughed at me, but guess what? Louisiana, here I am, eight years later, supportin’ y’all! Just bein’ tha leader that I am! And, you know what, I was really feelin’ that, despite tha “money” rhymes! My Rating: 4.5

03. “Thuggin’ Hard In The Trap House”
And then, tha weed cookies came! Kinda miss ‘em, right now, as tha trapper’s been real lazy to get ‘em, on Long Island! It’s like, supply yourself with motivation, somehow! Neva feel lazy!! Looka: I worked today; I opened, 4 AM – 11 AM at my job! And, I’m here right now, drove 90 minutes to go to Centralia, and I just walked around this whole highway! So, you gotta have that motivation in ya! Until they get motivation, we’re gonna get into Track #03, right here! >>> Luv tha trappin’ beginning! It was a lil’ snippet! I’m diggin’ this piano in tha beginning! “New York state of mind, like Nas;” you already know!! “New York” all day!! From tha “trap house” to tha “trap” bed; you fuckin’ her, Gates!! A nice lil’ Louisiana-kinda hook wit tha “what up?!?” I know, Ready kinda your enemy, a lil’ bit, but I remember tha ’06 dayz when y’all were cool! It’s all about tha Dead Game / Bottomline Music Group transition to now! Major deal, Gates! My Rating: 4.0

½time: For only three songs, this iz pretty good. Hopefully, we get somethin’ even more exciting comin’ up! I know my best song so far was tha one with tha catchy vocals with tha “money” hook. That was pretty good, so let’s hope we can do a lil’ better than that! But, at this point, we have tha average CD rating at a 4.3; that’s pretty good, Gates! Definitely beatin’ Boosie, so far! But, Boosie had more songs! But, your division’s a lil’ different ‘cause you have less songs! So, if you fuck up, it could go way down! So, keep tha consistency goin’, Gates, and I will continue to travel!

04. “Mexico”
That’s where my girl went, earlier in tha year, and got me a seashell from there and you can hear tha ocean with it! *Listens* Ahh, feels good! I oughta go to a beach with her! :) >>> Yeah, definitely kickin’ it off wit some trap shit! Whataya, get it from “Meh-hee-ko,” Gates? Your “pockets look like bunny ears,” huh? Salute to tha Gates! Flow’s got a lil’ Spanish influence in tha beat, a lil’ bit! That “ding-ding-ding-ding-ding!” Yep, “hangin’ off my ass!” That post I had from August 2008, I was quotin’ you from “Get In The Way (Remix)”, that lil’ picture I had, right after I graduated tha 1st college I went to! Still a music leader! Nobody knew who you was! “Meh-hee-ko!” You said it just like I said it! Yep, just like tha 1st verse, tha 2nd verse iz pretty great, too! Consistent street content at its finest! “Listen with tha stethoscope!” “Tha stethoscope!!” “Dress up like a woman?” Fuck that, Gates! That’s for Young Thug, okay!! Stay wit tha Thugga? Fuck no!! Yup, gotta support them, Gates! That’s what I try ta tell my girl: “Gotta support ya!” You may not want me to buy you things, but, you know, it’s in my heart! Fuckin’ love you, Gates!! “With tha stethoscope!!;” I fuckin’ love that line!! Nice job with tha 3rd verse, too, Gates! My Rating: 4.2

05. “Chico”
Hmm… >>> You and your “Brasi!” It’s a better beat sounding than tha last couple of tracks, so far, for tha intro… Sounds pretty catchy with tha vocals, once again! Yo “Jamaican bring tha reefa in!!” That’s a good delivery, once again! Beat’s pretty slow for a down south, trap style…; you really impressin’ me right here, Gates! You “read their review?” Well, I hope you “read” this one ‘cause, you know, I’m keepin’ an eye on you in this abandoned town on tha 1st verse! “Zolo voodoo?” See, I could really use some “reefa,” right now! Let yo “Jamaican bring dat reefa in” fa me! What in tha fuck iz a “zolo voodoo?” “Bring tha reefa in…!!” Yea, Kevin & I—yeah, his name iz Kevin, too—Kevin & I were jammin’ to you four years ago in my radio show that I had! Pretty consistent, I have ta say! Hopefully, you have a track on here—even though you only have two tracks left—where we have, like, really catchy beat sounds comin’ up! “My zolo voodoo… My Jamaican bring tha reefa in…!!” C’mon, I could use some! “My zolo voodoo, he could go to war! My Jamaican bring tha reefa in…”—looka, I know tha words!! You know what? That really impressed me! I dunno if I should rate it higher than tha other one? Hmm… My Rating: 4.5

06. “Her” feat. OG Boobie Black
Here comes a feature… >>> Again, you’re on tha consistent, trap, southern vibe, right chea! Just keepin’ your consistency goin’ You’re keepin’ your consistency goin’ with tha kinda themes for this CD! Yeah, I like tha “big booty with tha titties” line, Gates! Ewe, you “want nipple!” You “want nipple!!” A pretty-good 1st verse ta hear; I’m diggin’ this hook! You, like, really in this “her!” “I want her!” “…Fine ass!” What happened to this thing [dead deer]’s “ass?” I don’t need tha money; I just need to travel to places like this to make me happy! Here comes Boobie Black on tha 2nd verse… He rolled in tha “ass,” just like you, Gates! He soundin’ like a younger generation of K-Chill, like he was a decade-and-a-half younger… Pretty-good feature; it’s pretty-good to just break it up, here and there… My Rating: 4.1

07. “Khaza”
And, endin’ it with your daughter’s name… >>> A lil’ more jammin’ that I thought it was… LOL, “Hello?” Sounds like regular rappin’…; I dunno what else ta say… Yup, “lotta record labels;” who would’ve thought I’d have one behind me?! You have, like, two million followers on “Instagram!” “Smokin’ grapes while on an island;” I wish that was me, right now! LMAO, what tha hell was that screamin’? You just keep goin’ and goin’… LOL, “You annoying!!” Yeah, people don’t be dressin’ right, these dayz! At least I dress good/cool! Rappin’ quite a bit, there; I prolly would’ve expected more of a song than just a freestyle, but that was still pretty-good. My Rating: 3.6

Overall: I thought it was consistent for a trap-kinda southern vibe. Prolly could’ve had a lil’ catchier beats, maybe a lil’ less mainstream soundin’. But, what caught my attention was there were two songs that really caught my attention with tha vocals… And, for tha most part, I believe you beat Boosie, so that’s good! I like you way better… I will continue to support you to tha fullest! You’re definitely one of a kind, Kevin Gates! And, you know, I got nothin’ but luv for ya! First heard ya back on February 13, 2008, on Nu$$ie’s 2006 Bad Azz CD. That was tha 1st time I heard ya, and I’ve been followin’ ya eva since! You just, you bring dat “crack,” like your old song with Nu$$ie says!
