Review #71: Shawty Lo "Units In Da City"

Reviewed on 2.29.2008 & 3.02.2008 (Review No. 71)

Wat tha deal iz I'm back wit my LAST REVIEW for February 2008! OMG… What a long-ass, tiring-ass 29 nights of reviews! After I get all 29 up, I'll try and see if I get tha chance to rank them in order of how much I liked each one, No. 29 (bein' worst) to No. 1 (bein' tha best). As for tha last review, I was hangin' out wit my boy Jewison today, and he put in this CD. Since he put it in, I decided to find it, and review it. I heard a bunch of jointz for tha 1st time today, so some things on here gon sound familiar. Here goes my review for Shawty Lo "Units In Da City". Start Time: 11:42 PM | Video Game Playing: Super Mario RPG (for Super Nintendo) (on my computer)

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me or have auto-tune in your vocals, I’m not buyin’ it!

01. "100,000"
I know this was a good one when I heard it in my boy Tristan's dorm room (my boy Jewison and I were hangin' out in that room today chillin'). High AL on hearin' it again! I remember tha HOT beat! >>> Oh yeah that beat reminded me of a sample of somethin'… He sounds like someone to me (like someone odd) when he rapped in this joint (wit his voice). Good joint tho. It's nice and slow and somethin' I'd feel. My Rating: 4.3

Break: I finna go to sleep 'cause I'm tired as fuck @ 11:46 PM! >>> Aight I'm back 2 dayz later at 9:08 PM to continue this thang! Lookin' forward still to re-hearing it!

02. "Dey Know"
Call this one of tha bangerz of 2008. This song iz blowin' up everywhere. I first heard this beat from my dawg C-Coop (who I think just rapped over tha instrumental) on his joint "In Tha Ground". Tha beat iz real nice, and tha flow iz funny as fuck. Love tha rhymes too! >>> Oh yeah I was doin' tha dance to this 2 dayz ago wit my boy Jewison. If it's one dance I like, it's this one (and I usually hate dances)! My Current Rating: 4.7

03. "Dunn Dunn"
I know I was dancing to this joint Friday (and hearin' it in its entirety as well), but I didn't focus on hearin' it yet, so High AL! >>> Of course I love all those "dunn dunn da' dunn"s!! This tha shit right here. Gotta love it. Nice, plain, and simple hot shit. My Rating: 4.5

04. "Foolish"
Let's see this one… >>> Real nice beat. Good vibe to this joint. I like tha hook. This shit iz good for me. Nothin' much to say but "jammin'." My Rating: 4.3

05. "Let's Get It" Feat. Yola
Oh shit when I was listenin' to this wit Jewison Friday, I didn't catch Yola bein' on one of tha jointz (and I think we only got to like Song 12 before someone changed it back to No. 1). A High AL for this one! >>> This kinda off to a repetitive start, so I guess it's aight so far. Tha hook (more of tha title) sounds more recycled to "Dey Know". It took a lil' over 3 minutes for Yola to finally come up. Yeah this beat iz too repetitive (there's like no change in it and nothin' but consistant flowin'). Yeah, Yola did his thang. I hope he's feelin' a lot better from that shit last year! My Rating: 3.8

06. "Feels Good To Be Here"
Lemme hear this one… >>> I remember that lil' gurl in tha beginning from Friday. This one's nice and smooth. Somethin' pretty good to listen to. Can't mind it. And yeah, "it feels good to be here." My Rating: 3.9

07. "Ain't Tellin' You" Feat. Phace Baity
Who's tha featured dude? Lemme find out how good he iz. >>> Okay real good intro. Reminds me of tha Dugeon Family joint from 2002. Yeah good shit right here. I hear Phace right now, and it looks like he doin' tha fuckin' damn thang on this! Yeah great collabo right here! My Rating: 4.6

½time: Definitely off to a GREAT start! Hope tha end iz as well!

08. "Cut The Check" Feat. Lil' Mark & Braski
And to continue wit No. 7, who are these dudes? High AL! >>> Decent start wit a decent beat. I'm glad this CD iz jammin'. Just like my mom said, "as long as it has a good beat." Yeah nice collabo as well. Tha other one was a lot better tho along wit tha way tha joint sounded. My Rating: 4.0

09. "GA Lotto"
Oh wow a fuckin' song about tha lotto in GA? You know I have an obsession wit scratch-off lottery tickets (I have over $50,000 in losing tickets and I've found about $300 in winners too – I collect 'em 'cause they look cool). VERY HIGH AL 'cause that title!!! >>> Great beat intro!! Yeah!! What a great hook on this joint. Great flowin'. That beat reminds me of Blak Jak's "Bobbin' My Head". "Spendin' drug money like I hit tha Georgia lotto." Hot shit right there! My Rating: 4.7

10. "That's Shawty Lo"
A somewhat self-titled song right here. Got a High AL for it! >>> Sounds like a regular Nintendo beat intro. Oh no there's kids throughout tha intro & hook!  They're not bad on this, but I can't deal wit tha kids on any songs. Okay good verses by Shawty Lo, but those kids need to shut up! I rather hear Shawty Lo on tha hook. Okay I'm startin' to feel tha hook a lot better now. It has been flippin' back n' forth wit me. My Rating: 3.8

11. "Easily I Approach"
Yeah "easily" Shawty Lo made an "approach" wit this HOT CD! >>> Beat iz creepin' up in a good way. I like that "easily I approach" part in tha beginning. Great hook, and I'm likin' tha verses too. My Rating: 4.4

12. "Live My Life" Feat. Kool Ace
I have a feelin' this gon be a slow joint. >>> I guess that's a nice piano intro. Sounds like it could be a 3rd single. I don't see this bein' so bad for a smooth joint. That Kool Ace dude sounds like a weird version of Sean Kingston. My Rating: 3.4

13. "Got 'Em 4 The L.O." Feat. Gucci Mane & Stuntman
I just hit my boy DeTrane up. Let's see if he hits me back. For now, I finna peep out this joint. Tha usual drug saying for Shawty Lo: "I got 'em for tha L.O.!" Let's hear it as a song! >>> Sounds a lil' like a dancey beat mixed wit tha old snap music (oh yeah I'm GLAD this CD ain't full of snap shit). Decent drug song, but I've heard a lot better. That beat… there's somethin' wrong wit it… I like tha simple hook tho. My Rating: 3.7

14. "Count On Me" Feat. Miss T
Lemme hear this female combo… >>> Ewe I can't hear a girl sing in a song "I can make it rain on you." Sounds too odd… Not too crazy about this. Not somethin' I'd really like. My Rating: 2.9

15. "We Gon Ride" Feat. Mook B, G-Child, Stuntman, Lil' Mark & 40
Look at this collabo! Tha whole thing + tha title gives me a VERY HIGH AL for this joint!! I had a HUGE song blow up wit me in tha 2nd ½ of 2007 by Rane & C.A. wit tha same title. It was CRA-ZY!!! I hope this iz just as good (as I heard this was good)!!! >>> Okay tha beat iz a lil' smooth. Tha other "We Gon Ride" had a hard-ass beat. Almost nearly tha same type of hook, only Rane & C.A.'s was better. Still think this iz not that bad tho. I guess Stuntman iz a part of D4L (didn't realize 'til now). Yeah that was good (tha hook was nice and smooth too). I just had too much anticipation for this… My Rating: 3.9

Overall: End Time: 3.02.2008 @ 10:20 PM. Yeah definitely a great CD. Thanx to my boy Jewison for givin' me tha idea by playin' it on Friday. That's watz good. Puttin' this shit on my iPod. Just like wit dance music, I go wit tha music/beat first, then tha vocals, and then tha lyrics.

Rankings (according to ratings):

15. "Count On Me" Feat. Miss T 2.9
14. "Live My Life" Feat. Kool Ace 3.4

12. "Let's Get It" Feat. Yola 3.8
11. "That's Shawty Lo" 3.8

02. "GA Lotto" 4.7
01. "Dey Know" 4.7

^ Close tie-breaker for No. 1, but I put "Dey Know" as my favorite 'cause that song has been real consistant wit everything (especially tha remix). But yeah, good shit on this CD. Major props to that boy Jewison.
