Review #1,427: Baton Rouge Music Company Presents "Respect The Music Vol. 1 (Hosted by DJ Knuckles)"

Reviewed on 1.29.2015 (Review #1,427)

Tryna make some time for some reviewz, here, before tha month ends… I’m really not tryna review anything 2015 ‘cause I need to catch up on a lotta things, so a few CDs I was issued in late 2014, I gotta get outta tha way… This one I finna review right now: Baton Rouge Music Company Presents Respect The Music Vol. 1 (Hosted by DJ Knuckles). As much as I’m excited and think it’s like a throwback to them old Baton Rouge compilation times of ’08, at tha same time, I’m a lil’ weirded out. For some reason, last year, right when I finally became a full-time worker, everyone really turned their back on me: Niggaz unfollowin’ me, niggaz blockin’ me, niggaz not sendin’ me CDs when it comes out (I know I’m real tied up, but if you said you “fuck wit me,” why I ain’t get nothin’? Tha attempt counts!). And also, Louisiana music suffered a fatal blow on February 5, 2014 when Baton Rouge producer/rapper, B-Real, blocked me from social media sites. Once that happened, not one song from Louisiana’s underground got added to my playlist, and I kept tryna force myself to fade away. It sux for y’all ‘cause there’s some pretty hot girls I work with and I can’t mention anything good from Louisiana to them ‘cause I’ve been forever-infected by B-Real’s blocking… So, if I get bitchy, I really don’t care; I’m a Shift Leader & Music Leader and speak my mind much better than before! So, without further or do, here I go… And please note, I have, like, no time for reviewz, so feel appreciated that I’m takin’ almost 80 minutes outta my time to sit down and review, right now!! Start Time: 5:32 PM | End Time: 7:22 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you use tha word “swag” frequently, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. DJ Knuckles “DJ Knuckles Intro”
*Gulp…* >>> Nice intro… Oh, I thought this was Vol. 11? Must’ve been an error on tha front cover? Okay, at least I know it’s Vol. 1… Nice intro from tha phone… My Rating: N/A

02. Lil’ Boxx “Music Symbols & Dollar Signs”
Startin’ off tha compilation with a normal Baton Rouge rapper that’s never had a problem with me! I have no idea what to expect, but he did a drop, according to tha filename… >>> Nice lil’ drop from Boxx on tha intro… Oh, filename must be cut-off, so I can only go with “Music Symbols” for tha title (EDIT: Google-searched it; full title: “Music Symbols & Dollar Signs”… As far as tha beat, it’s pretty good; I has a partial Baton Rouge sound to it while tha other partial sound’s on a mainstream, southern level… Hearin’ tha hook and it sounds nice to hear; great energy, as always! Even more energy on tha 1st verse; consistent rhymes at its finest! Glad he neva lost it! Tha 2nd verse’s pretty nice, too; gotta dig tha “ense” / “ence”-rhymin’ words! So catchy with that hook, here; gotta dig it! Though a “money” hook, I can’t bitch about this, luckily; it’s not like it’s tha cocky type that I can’t stand (“I’m gettin’ money, fuck what you think”-type shit, where they can’t even share or spend money, especially on me)! My Rating: 4.4

03. Jay Sloan “Jay Sloan Drop”
Hmm… >>> Lookin’ forward to hearin’ it; like that tha music’s in tha background on this drop… My Rating: N/A

04. Jay Sloan “100”
Dez Dynamic on tha track, here; let’s see what’s good… >>> Volume sounds kinda low… Either way, for a newbie, I’m diggin’ this; nice hook! Sounds like a white dude? Could be that new white dude to keep an eye on… Nice 1st verse with tha “100” perspectives and that hook, once again’s pretty nice! Tha 2nd verse sounds good, too… See, no braggin’ shit, here. Anyone that raps all braggin’ and raps about nothin’ but “money” and “you a pussy-ass nigga”’s usually insecure and has problems of themselves; I know tha game better now! My Rating: 3.9

05. Dark Ace “Exclusive Drop”
>>> Ooh, looked like a DJ name; ain’t expect them to have a song… My Rating: N/A

06. Dark Ace “Bottle Rocket”
Lemme hear! >>> Okay, volume’s back to normal, here; really diggin’ tha beat! Really diggin’ these new people I ain’t hear of, before, and this some great pickin’ of tracks, here! Glad I haven’t bitched once and I’m 1/5 through this disc! Definitely a nice hook with this beat; gotta jam to it! Tha 1st verse sounds pretty good; diggin’ tha energy, once again! Again, it sounds like anotha upcoming white boy, or somethin’; I’m quite impressed, outta nowhere, after preparing myself for a mess! Tha 2nd verse sounds pretty good; likin’ how tha beat changed up a lil’ bit!! Even tha 3rd verse has a beat change in tha beginning of it, too; nice! Definitely feelin’ this energy for tha undaground! My Rating: 4.2

07. South Coast Coalition “SCC Exclusive Drop”
Almost thought South Coast Coalition was completely done for when I first started talkin’ to Mista Matt back in tha beginning of ’09… >>> Well, this iz B-Rock, here; decent… My Rating: N/A

08. South Coast Coalition “Could It Be”
A new song? I dunno how high my anticipation iz, since I kinda get confused with people that just randomly disappear off tha face of tha Earth… I mean, I know I’ve been strugglin’ with keepin’ up, but ever since my Louisiana connection started back in 2007, I’ve always done at least one thing each month for Louisiana! Haven’t missed one month, yet! >>> Regardless of anything, whether these words just stay in this review only, this sounds pretty nice. I’m really likin’ tha underground, southern beat and tha hook has a catch to it of what “could… be!” Tha 1st verse sounds pretty nice; tha 2nd verse sounds pretty good, too… I like how this has an old-soundin’ vibe to it, once again… Tha 3rd verse’s pretty nice, too; “Mista Matt,” huh? Talk about an actual Throwback Thursday moment, right chea, it seems like! My Rating: 4.4

09. Alvin Ray “Alvin Ray Exclusive Drop”
Almost thought this was Ar’Jay from BluBlack’s fam… >>> Don’t think I’ll anticipate this next one, with EQ on tha beat… That “Money…” album title makes me wanna throw-up, as well! My Rating: N/A

10. Alvin Ray feat. Kevin Gates “You Don’t Love Me”
>>> I wanna say that I can’t really feel this that much; almost thought tha voice in tha background of tha drop was worse, but it’s a lil’ better than I expected… Anyway, Gates on tha 1st verse; sounds pretty good, but ain’t his prices in tha five-figga digits by now? Like, who’s this artist he’s collaborating with? Anyway, good verse collaboration… Let’s hear this 2nd verse from Alvin Ray… “I’m gettin’ doe;” no! Feelin’ tha voice and aggression in tha flow, at least… I like tha “Ghost like Casper” line, at least… “Check” to end off tha 2nd verse? Damn… I think it’s been at least three years now since I’ve even attempted to like underground rap that has “money” mentioned in tha verses… Here’s a 3rd verse from Alvin Ray… Feelin’ this faster flow; likin’ tha “plate” part with swallowin’ tha whole “plate!” This turned out way better than I thought it was gonna be; thought we were gonna have our first failed song! My Rating: 3.6

11. DJ Knuckles “DJ Knuckles Exclusive Drop”
>>> Lookin’ forward… My Rating: N/A

12. Jay Sloan feat. Mannie Fresh “Already Made”
A repeat artist on this mixtape, already, but I’m still lookin’ forward to a new Mannie Fresh production… >>> Diggin’ tha intro from Fresh and even though it’s a “money” topic, I don’t really mind it on this hook; kinda has a throwback vibe of tha late ‘00s to it… Tha 1st verse from Sloan ain’t too bad, here… Tha 2nd verse ain’t too bad; kinda gettin’ cocky with all this “stacked money” and shit, which can turn me off… Yeah, by tha 3rd verse, I’m really losin’ interest in this, except tha beat… My Rating: 3.4

13. Lil’ Yella “Lil’ Yella Exclusive Drop”
LOL @ “exclusive.”
>>> Lookin’ forward… My Rating: N/A

14. Lil’ Yella feat. Sycamoore Ranson & Sam I Am “Don’t Be In The Club”
Nice lineup, includin’ a newbie in tha middle, produced by Nick Dangin. Lemme see what we got goin’ on here… >>> I’m tryna get excited for this with tha intro; tryna get some excitement outta my Louisiana depression, lately… Tha beat’s pretty nice and tha hook’s got that Louisiana vibe I really like, so I should appreciate this while I can! Hearin’ tha Sycamoore person on tha 1st verse; I ain’t expect it to be a female! She sounds real consistent and great for a track/beat like this; great job! Gotta roll dat “weed” up! It’s about time I got into all dat! I mean, I ain’t have tha connections I have now! Just luv how it got to as far as a cookie; talk about wiggin’!! Tha 2nd verse from Yella sounds nice, too; gotta luv tha drug references and tha energetic vibe! See, this iz why I came to embrace Louisiana: Dat jigg, drug-related, energetic, not-depressing topics! LOL, here comes Sam I Am on tha 3rd verse; almost sounds like a familiar verse, but it ain’t… You already know he’s had tha same voice for over a decade now! Great job; these verses were shorter than I expected, too… My Rating: 4.6

15. Big Bandit “Big Bandit Exclusive Drop”
Let’s hear it! >>> Lookin’ forward! My Rating: N/A

½time: A lot better than I expected, as far as feelin’ comfortable to review this… Tha selection of mostly unknown artists, as well as tha tracks, are real nice to hear! It’s a nice attempt at resurrectin’ my interest in Louisiana music from tha undaground… With that bein’ said, a nice 4.1 for tha CD rating, currently; let’s keep it movin’!

16. Big Bandit feat. J-Byrd “Wild’n Out”
Looks nice, with Young Hits on tha beat… Kinda feel like I’m hintin’ enemy territory with tha production ‘cause I almost feel like B-Real can jump outta nowhere, so I gotta prepare! >>> This has that vibe I really like just like tha Yella song I just heard; definitely some classic-soundin’ shit, here!! Diggin’ tha beat more than tha Yella beat; great job, Hits! No guilty pleasure feelings, here! Tha hook’s real nice, too, as far as tha energy!! And then, at work, they ask, “How iz he this happy in tha morning?” Who can’t be when you been raised with tha Baton Rouge sound?! Nice job wit tha 1st verse, here!! Also, tha title’s a reference to Nick Cannon’s Wild’n Out, lol… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it literally sounds like y’all sound like tha same people, here, lol… Really diggin’ this club vibe and I hope that by tha time I finally make it to Baton Rouge that I can get to a club and get these vibes!! LOL @ “autographin’ tha titties!” Tha 3rd verse, here, and yeah, here’s Bandit (almost thought it would’ve been “J-Byrd featuring” with tha two verses, but it still cool…); definitely diggin’ it! Definitely luvin’ tha vibes, once again!! Y’all tore it up, here!! Neva get old!! I smoke, get high & and hang wit a 47-year-old chick; y’all like two decades younger, or 1.5 decades!! My Rating: 4.8

17. Alvin Ray “At Ease”
Doesn’t really look anticipatin’… >>> Caught me by surprise with this beat start… Sounds pretty good, though tha vocals are 50/50, here… Sometimes, it sounds annoying; sometimes, it sounds soft; sometimes, it sounds like it goes hard… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it sounds pretty good; nice rhymes, without anything soundin’ played out… Tha 2nd verse sounds pretty nice with tha dedication to tha “clubs!” Overall, this turned out better than I thought it would be! Almost thought there was a 3rd verse, but it’s a nice ending with “gettin’ it in!” My Rating: 4.3

18. DeTrane “Gotta Lotta Respect Drop”
Iz that an artist name? >>> Oh, it’s you, DeTrane; oh, a classic comin’ up? Ain’t think one would be on here… My Rating: N/A

19. MC Nero “Gotta Lotta Respect”
OMG, lol, hilarious to see this on here; nice appearance! Thought I reviewed this back when I was tryna complete my delayed Louisiana Reviewz Marathon, but I ain’t, lol… This gon be a quick lil’ review ‘til I get to it, so short story soon to be long: Really nice and hyped-up sound for tha ‘90s with it jammin’ and consistent; gotta luv his chantin’! My Rating: 4.5

20. DeTrane “Rest In Peace Nu$$ie”
Good grief, why does he still gotta be brought up? No offense, but it seems like some people can’t let tha past go… Those times just remind me of not knowin’ how to get high, havin’ no car, dick-suckin’ every fuckin’ rapper from Baton Rouge and doin’ shit for free. Hahaha, those times are completely behind me, finally! If today was 2008, I would’ve been like, “Fuck you, whoever, you gimme Nu$$ie’s number!” Nobody took me seriously, back then… >>> It’s just you on tha drop. Good thing I can just press, “Skip;” Savage don’t even fuck wit me, no more. I told him I had a job and I’m not gonna be available anymore and he caught feelings. It’s like, you answered me all tha time when I was a bitchin’ bitch and now that I get high and keep myself busy without talkin’ to people, it’s just silence? Yeah, I know self-centeredness iz tha new cool; that’s why, I’m a self-centered dickhead now and just live my life by working! Also, because I’m a Shift Leader at my job, I even took time outta my busy-ass schedule to wish him a Happy Birthday through Instagram and he ain’t even read tha message. Gee, thanx? Go suck tha non-smoking Frankie’s dick, then; I’m a way better person now and niggaz ain’t followin’ me, anymore! My Rating: N/A

21. Nu$$ie feat. Lil’ Cali & Savage “They Hate My (Remix)”
Not writing anything… Hope they just shove this old rating up their ass! My Current Rating: 4.6

22. D-So Da Ghetto Hero “D-So Da Ghetto Hero Exclusive Drop”
I’m gettin’ closer to reviewin’ that new disc of his… >>> I totally agree wit him, here! Glad “dat Jigga City shit [ain’t] dead;” you already know!! Gotta luv his voice, as always, and no matter tha age, keep this shit alive! Bein’ autistic, I develop slowly, so whether or not it took ‘til 26 to frequently get high, at least I did all my Master’s Degree shit and got that outta tha way, first, before other shit came to distract me! My Rating: N/A

23. D-So feat. Sam I Am “Ain’t No Secret”
Lookin’ forward to hearin’ it! >>> Yeah, neva “dead;” tha “Jigg City” sound stays alive! However, one thing I have to disagree with: Big Scoob’s Instagram’s private; what kinda shit’s that? Artists need to have music pages again, instead of havin’ their music name and havin’ shit private! It’s like, did they give up? Anyway, beat’s real nice, here, fa this vibe and tha hook’s nice! Gotta keep this shit alive! Here’s D-So on tha 1st verse and it sounds pretty nice; great, ageless voice ta hold this down! Tha 2nd verse’s pretty nice, too; keep it goin’, bruh!! Of course, once again, gotta luv tha hook! “Blowin’ loud;” all day!! Get ta smoke wit tha chicks, now! And, here’s Sam on tha 3rd verse; glad y’all keepin’ dis Jiggalaters shit alive! Gotta always be connected and neva separated from makin’ music! Of course, great aggression and jigg’d up, as always!! My Rating: 4.6

24. DeTrane feat. Target & Mashes “Like This, Like That”
No artist listed? Kinda scared to listen, lol? I betta go take a shit, first! *Shits at 6:39 PM…* *Completes shittin’ at 6:44 PM…* Aight, lemme see, here… >>> Nice beat start to get you hyped up… You on tha 1st verse? It iz; okay, no fear, luckily… Tha volume sounds quieter, but tha hook sounds pretty nice with these females helpin’ you out! Glad to hear you rappin’ once again, with tha 1st verse! It sounds pretty good, here… LOL, “no masturbate?” Random that you mentioned it ‘cause I was thinkin’ of a review from seven years ago I did, where I had a “masturbate” intermission. It’s ironic ‘cause I had tha “shittin’” intermission, here… Anyway, nice job, here! Tha 2nd verse sounds nice, here, from this Target person; not like tha store, lol? It sounds pretty good, here; regular white boy rap, here, with tha flow and sound… Tha female on tha 3rd verse, here (Mashes?)… It sounds nice, although a lil’ quiet with tha whole track’s sound, overall? I’m diggin’ her sexual shit; nice collab! LOL @ tha ending, between you and tha chick with tha “Girl, I like…” / “Boy, I like…;” nice! My Rating: 4.2

Note: #25’s removed from this review and iz not bein’ reviewed due to tha artist’s name iz search-friendly online, and can read any feedback given. Therefore, there’s no need for any feedback, whatsoever.

Now, in 2015, with my now-working, self-centered ass, I prolly wouldn’t mind any kinda feedback I give. However, after randomly bein’ called “gay” a few years ago in a freestyle (all ‘cause I got deleted for puttin’ them on tha radio? Really…?), I don’t think I should let any doors open, again. I mean, maybe, in tha future, just to see where I’m at now and that I get high, but for now, no… Also, recently, I had a friend whose mom’s a lesbian, so any kinda homophobia references I don’t take lightly… And, over tha past four years, I’ve never come clean about skipping and not typing anything with this artist. However, it’s basically ‘cause it would’ve been search-friendly online, typing his name… With that bein’ said, it’s easier to ignore than to show luv to… I know I’m a Shift Leader and all that, but really, there’s no need for tha name-bashing!

26. Lil’ Witness feat. One-i “If I Die”
This should be somethin’ good to hear!! >>> Sounds good with tha beat and Witness, though tha hook gives me weird feelings with Witness singin’ this one… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and tha lyrics are real nice for Witness; gotta feel ‘em. Tha 2nd verse from One-i’s good, too. Other than tha hook kinda givin’ me weird feelings with tha “die” and tha singin’, it a good track, overall. Also gotta add that I always wonder “if I die.” Like, at my job, they value me! Could you imagine them closin’ tha store if I died? But, with Louisiana, I’ll be remembered as a legend, though alive at tha moment, I don’t feel tha value… My Rating: 4.0

27. Carolinah Blue “Rep For”
I don’t think he anything special, if I recall… >>> Anotha surprise for tha beginning of an unexpectedly hot track! Nice beat and this dude sounds nice on tha hook; feelin’ tha vibe… I almost thought he was an auto-tune addict or somethin’ a few years ago… Anyway, tha 1st verse’s great; diggin’ his energy and consistent rhymin’ ova this beat… Props fa reppin’ “for” dat good shit on tha hook, especially “Baton Rouge, Louisiana!” Tha 2nd verse’s pretty-good, too; keep it goin’! At 2:39, it’s just tha beat; really, a 1:13 beat outro? Thought I would’ve gotten a 3rd verse outta this… Right at tha end: J.Scalez beat tag; nice beat! My Rating: 4.1

28. T Carr feat. Alvin Ray “Hard”
Lemme see if this go “hard” or not… >>> Sounds like it does, on a jigg tip! Just shoutin’ out my manager’s name in my head with “tastic,” once I hear tha beginning beat!! “Trally Boy,” too? Hmm… Definitely diggin’ tha 1st verse and tha beat, here; great-soundin’, energetic beat with tha shit that’s goin’ on, here! Oh, I had to google it and Trally Boy changed his name to “T Carr,” here; interesting… I do like tha “Trally Boy” name better, though… Anyway, great job with tha both of y’all on tha 1st verse; dumb shit! And yeah, “I go hard on every verse;” definitely co-signed by ya boy, FrankieThaLuckyDog!! Nice job with tha promotion, BRMC a.k.a. Baton Rouge Music Company a.k.a. DeTrane!! Hearin’ y’all both on tha 2nd verse and this iz pretty nice; I’m definitely feelin’ this! Could this be my top-rated track on this mixtape? We shall see! Definitely a close one; luv how they saved tha best for tha end! Also, when they say, “I go hard on every verse,” on tha hook, it almost sounds like a Master P voice, a lil’, lol… I wish I could get that B-Real venom outta me and get back to addin’ good shit like this to my playlist! I could only imagine what this shit sounds like while high? Kevin Gates like tha only person that I’ve heard from Louisiana while high… And, that’s mainly ‘cause he mainstream, now, so I don’t have to bend over backwards for an underground add… My Rating: 4.7

29. MC Really Real “MC Really Real Drop”
Could it be our Nero? >>> Oh yea? Yeah, I believe this him, from “New Orleans,” accordin’ to him? My Rating: N/A

30. MC Really Real “Don’t Know Me”
Or, maybe not, lol? Seems like a nice throwback with tha name, but a new joint, here, to wrap up this mixtape; lemme hear… >>> Sounds pretty nice to end this off! Thought this was gon sound like some New Orleans gangsta shit with a bounce vibe, but it’s like that Baton Rouge gangsta sound, here… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s pretty nice; definitely diggin’ tha aggression in tha voice! Tha 1st verse’s nice, too; nice and undaground at its finest! Tha 2nd verse’s pretty nice with this “baseball game”-themed beginning of tha verse; good shit! Didn’t expect this to be over five minutes long but it’s still good to hear… Tha 3rd verse ain’t too bad, but prolly could’ve been better if there were only two verses here ‘cause it’s kinda long… My Rating: 4.2

Overall: So, 80 minutes turned into 110 minutes, due to I attempted to have anticipation for this mixtape and not rush it. And, it was a success! Definitely a real-nice job, here, DeTrane; didn’t expect all tha unknown artists, especially during a time like this! A lotta great production and that great aggression, energy, and jigg-related shit that I always look for! I know our consistency with our mixtapes aren’t there anymore (as I had my final issue, Tha Louisiana Archives Vol. 17, last March, dayz before I started my job), but we can still put out a product that gets appreciated—well, you get appreciated and I don’t. As I’m still that big ‘myth’ in everyone in Louisiana’s minds, my fairytale time may be up soon… Who knows, I could be closer to gettin’ to Louisiana… It may happen one year, comin’ up; be prepared! We’re gettin’ closer!
