R.I.P. Video #71: Ed West

Recorded April 26, 2020

Broadcasting from my closet, here in Northeast PA, it's ya boy, FrankieThaLuckyDog here, sadly reportin' anotha tragic loss in tha Louisiana hip-hop community.

Edward James West, Sr., known in tha music business as multiple names, like Edward J. West, Ed, Ed West, Mr. West or Big Ed, passed away from COVID-19 complications on Friday, April 3, 2020; he was only 51 years-old.

West's music career began as a frequent collaborator in tha Louisiana rap business. West was featured on over 20 releases in tha undaground business, keepin' his soul active for tha undaground headz to devour. In May of 1993, West was a Production Coordinator for Hard Head Records, till tha end of 1995. Following up tha label work, in January of 1996, West became tha Vice President for Ruff Era Records, till tha end of 1999. Shifting more to an urban contemporary/gospel sound to kick off tha new millennium, in 2000, West, Dominic Davis & Larry Jones formed Collage III. Shortly after, West became tha owner of Collage III's label, Collage Worldwide Entertainment. In 2001, Collage III released their debut album, Living The Lyrics, on Collage Entertainment. In September of 2006, West became tha owner of Nu-City Construction & in May of 2007, he became tha director of One Vision, One Voice, designing "an innovative program for students to experience the academic discipline, art & business of music, while adding to their repertoire of artistic expression." In 2013, Collage III released another album, Under Construction, courtesy of Collage Worldwide Entertainment. West kept his passion goin' for music until April 3, 2020, when he passed away from Coronavirus complications. If West made it to see July 29th of this year, he woulda turned 52 years-old.

Review #1,615: Murder Inc. "Let's Die 2-Gether"

Reviewed on 1.29.2017 (Review #1,615)

Let’s keep this Louisiana Reviewz Marathon goin’ with Murder Inc. Let’s Die 2-Gether, released in 1997 on Hard Head Records & was produced by Big Lou, Big Ro, White Boy Greg, Lil’ Mickey & Miss.! Start Time: 5:04 PM | End Time: 6:12 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> “ iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> “ iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

>>> Sounds okay for an intro… My Rating: N/A

02. “Barrel Of Uh Hard Head (Remix)”
>>> Finally, we have a quality-soundin’ review! Ironic that I started tha review at 5:04 PM? Sounds good with this G-Funk beat and how tha 1st verse’s comin’ through fa tha streetz! A “‘96” track fa tha ’97, here… Tha hook sounds nice, even tho it only mainly just tha title… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s pretty nice, as well; good street shit ova this beat… And, tha 3rd verse’s pretty nice, too, with a nice ending, as well! My Rating: 4.4

06. “Revengeful-Ass Nigga”
Dope title! >>> Beat sounds nice; diggin’ tha catchy hook, here… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s pretty nice to enjoy… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and y’all got this shit on lock… Hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it’s decent… When it’s decent, it’s usually when tha lady raps… One of tha Murder Inc. dudes iz on tha 2nd ½ of tha 3rd verse and it sounds much betta wit this aggressive voice! My Rating: 4.2

07. “Coming 2 Uh End”
>>> Sounds dope! Diggin’ this eerie beat and hook! Tha lady’s on tha 1st verse and she’s pretty energetic, this time! Nice! Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s pretty upbeat, as well! 08. “Born Uh Sinner”
>>> Sounds nice ta hear, here… Tha beat sounds like a nice lil’ West Coast-like track, as well as tha rhymin’ on tha 1st verse… Hearin’ tha hook and it catchy wit how they sing tha title… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it ain’t bad, here… My Rating: 4.1

09. “Finally Freed Me”
>>> Sounds like a nice lil’ G-Funk track, here… Great job wit tha verses and how y’all came through wit this one, from tha “pen!” My Rating: 4.0

½time: Diggin’ how this CD’s soundin’, so far; good shit! A 4.3-rated CD, so far; let’s keep it goin’! Y’all got tha lyrics, deliveries & production on lock, here!

10. “Thangs Neva Change”
>>> Sounds dope wit this beat and this lil’ hook, here, wit tha singin’… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s dope, except how dude “lost [his] mom” while she gave birth to him… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s soundin’ nice, here, as well… My Rating: 4.2

11. “Murderous Illusions”
>>> Beat sounds nice, once again, as well as tha hook… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s pretty creepy wit these “evil” lyrics… Lol @ tha start to tha 2nd verse: “My name iz Dahmer, but I’m not related to Jeffrey;” nice… Great job wit tha rest of this! My Rating: 4.3

12. “Slugfest”
>>> Sounds pretty nice; diggin’ this upbeat, West Coast beat! Nice job wit tha consistent 1st verse, here! Tha 2nd verse’s soundin’ pretty dope and unstoppable, as well! Really diggin’ that hook wit that G-Funk sound to it! Definitely a dope anthem! Tha 3rd verse sounds crazy wit how it’s delivered and this whole vibe! My Rating: 4.5

Tha 3rd verse’s pretty dope ta hear, as well… My Rating: 4.2

15. Car Scene (Uh Pull Over)
Interesting? >>> Crazy when you “pull over” and it’s ironic ‘cause Fitz & The Tantrums “HandClap” was just playin’! Oh, May 18, 2016! As far as this skit goes, fuck turnin’ “down tha music!” My Rating: N/A

16. “Fuck Friends”
>>> Beat sounds nice, here… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s nice; nothin’ much ta say about it… I just luv that G-Funk sound! Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s dope ta hear; good shit! Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s soundin’ good from tha lady… Hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it’s soundin’ nice ta hear, as well! Did y’all “make a million?” Woulda been dope! 18. “Silence Me (Remix)”
>>> Dope beat ta kick thangz off, here… Tha hook’s pretty smooth and tight, here; gotta dig it! Tha 1st verse’s nice ta hear, as well; laidback rappin’, this time… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it’s decent wit tha lady, once again; feelin’ tha crazy, southern-livin’ lyrics… Keepin’ it goin’ wit tha 3rd verse, here, soundin’ nice wit gettin’ through this “life” they call tha ghetto… Really feelin’ these rhymes fa someone “20 years-old,” here… “Like, if you gave me a 9, I just might kill wit it;” crazy! My Rating: 4.3

Overall: Definitely a dope CD, here! Each song was pretty nice, as far as tha flows, production & tha rhymes were definitely on point! Props to y’all! Glad y’all did y’all thang wit this one!

02. “Ganksta Shit”
Looks good for tha title; let’s see! >>> DEFINITELY comin’ through wit dat “ganksta shit” right chea! Ooh, tha dude on tha 1st verse sounds a lil’ like a different-voiced Juvenile! Tha rhymes are DEFINITELY crazy here and I’m feelin’ all tha G-Funk/G-Shit to tha fullest!! I like how there’s a gurl on dis shit too! She’s on tha 2nd verse here, REALLY spittin’ some gutta-ass shit to tha fullest!!! Gr8 team y’all are!! Tha 3rd verse sounds pretty “ganksta” wit tha shit bein’ spit right chea too! Gr8 startin’ song to tha fullest!! My Rating: 4.5

03. “Shit’z Real”
Pretty gutta wit how tha “Shit’z” looks in tha title! Let’s see how y’all bring it dis time!! >>> Definitely inta tha G-Funk soundin’ here wit tha gangsta-ass rhymes!! Tha hook was good from tha dude and now, tha 1st verse’s tha gurl, doin’ her thang! Tha 2nd verse sounds good wit tha dude doin’ his thang right chea! Good job wit tha real-life-type rhymes here and now, tha verse switches to tha gurl! It’s all about these real-ass street topics and detailed lives!! Ooh, it switched back to tha dude! “Been slangin’ dem stones since knee high;” whoa!! Sounds like someone’s featured on dis? Too bad it doesn’t say but tha “shit’z” OFFICIAL!! I like tha shout outs at tha end; thumbs up! I found out online dat B-Lo’s really Beelow tha rapper and Da Ganksta’s tha gurl. My Rating: 4.6

04. “Ackin’ Badd”
I like dis title right chea; let’s see how y’all hold it down! >>> DEFINITELY an anthem for tha start here; y’all don’t need an intro! Ganksta holdin’ down tha hook and B-Lo’s holdin’ down tha 1st verse! Good shit for tha “Rouge” and err-body! Mo hot-ass shit for tha streetz from Ganksta on tha 2nd verse here! She holdin’ down tha verse so you KNOW y’all a gr8 team at ALL times!! Now, tha 3rd verse here… It’s tha both of y’all alternatin’; gr8 combo!! My Rating: 4.3

Looks like it’ll be a GR8 one based off dis title!! >>> Feelin’ tha creepin’ beat start! Tha hook sounds good fa dis one right chea! Even though it’s on tha strugglin’-type, I like how it’s delivered here when it comes ta tha HOT sounds of B-Lo & Da Ganksta!! Speakin’ of B, you’re on tha 1st verse here, REALLY holdin’ yaself down!! Tha gunshots right when tha 1st verse ended was pretty gutta… Iz there someone else on tha 2nd verse? I see features on tha CD cover but as I’m googlin’ online, no features are comin’ up… He spelled his name: “J-O-C-H-A-N-S-C-O-T-T;” who dat? Anyway, it was a GR8 verse and now, it’s time fa Ganksta on tha 3rd verse wit her gangsta shit! My Rating: 4.5
EDIT: Tha cover says tha features are Murder Inc.’s Legend Man, III Deadly Sins & Face Forever. GR8 features, regardless!

09. “You Gotz It On Yo Mind”
I like dis title, ya feel me! >>> Sounds pretty good for a start; it’s all about havin’ it “on yo mind,” lol. Nothin’ but STR8 gangsta shit 24/7 when it comes ta dis content!! Glad you “from tha Rouge,” B-Lo, ya dig! It was cool talkin’ to you tha one time when I was on tha phone wit Young Hits; I didn’t expect dat… Tha ending wit all tha “wards” was good ta hear too! My Rating: 4.3

Oh, really? This must be pretty interestin’ ta hear!! >>> Cool beat intro here; back ta more ’96-soundin’ shit here… Also, Ganksta’s back on dis so good thing! Tha hook sounds pretty strong wit tha content and tha beat’s real nice ta hear on dis too!! Tha 1st verse from Ganksta’s pretty TIGHT wit tha HOT-ASS street shit goin’ on here!! It’s like a sandwich fulla HOT street shit!!! Tha 2nd verse iz B-Lo and tha shit’s pretty interestin’ when it comes ta recoverin’ tha “mom!” Real interestin’ topic right chea from tha both of y’all!! Just nothin’ but tha BEST when it comes ta undaground Louisiana Rap shit!! Luvin’ tha alternatin’ rappers here in tha 2nd verse; tha 2nd ½ of tha 2nd verse’s raw as fuck!!! This iz interestin’ wit tha “I’ma neva say, ‘die’,” shit!” DEFINITELY tha BEST joint on dis CD right chea!!! Tha 3rd verse has two rappers and it’s HOT to tha fullest!! 17. “Tricks Only”
Wonder exactly what dis iz about… >>> Ehh @ tha 4:50 on tha length; tha beat start doesn’t sound like I wanna sit here for 4:50… Anyway, still off to an aight start wit tha hook. Yea, this iz kinda sour fa me… Nothin’ really ta say about tha 1st verse… Tha 2nd verse iz also for “them hoes” but I rather this sound betta ‘cause tha sound iz just boring fa me… Tha 3rd verse doesn’t have much fa me either… Where’s Ganksta? Review #440: Murder Inc. "Playin' For Keeps"

Reviewed on 5.05.2010 (Review #440)

Keepin’ tha day HOT, let’s get into my 9th review for today: It’s Murder Inc. “Playin’ For Keeps”! For those watchin’, this iz WAY before Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc., ya dig! I’m curious ta see what this’ll be like!! Start Time: 9:13 PM | End Time: 9:53 PM

Quick Note: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion!! I only please myself wit my ratings!! I don’t care how lyrical you are! As long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings (if a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much REALLY LOVE it as it’s considered “mindblowin’” when I hear it) so any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song. Anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it.
