Review #195: Lil' Mac "The Lyrical Midget"

Reviewed on 5.05.2009 (Review No. 195)

Shid, it’s FrankieThaLuckyDog, back up in this bitch! Time to do a review for tha currently incarcerated Lil’ Mac, and his 1989 release, “The Lyrical Midget”. I’m glad this will be more on tha Rap side (unlike tha previous reviews in tha marathon that were more party-type songs). Once again, here goes tha review: Lil’ Mac “The Lyrical Midget”! Right about now, this review gon set a mark in my book ‘cause it’s tha first cassette review!! Start Time: 10:11 PM | End Time: 11:07 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me or have auto-tune in your vocals, I’m not buyin’ it!

01. “I Need Wheels”
Looks like we gon start tha beginning of this tape (LOL, not CD) off wit some good shit! I’m lookin’ forward to seein’ what direction he gon start this tape off wit!! >>> Sounds like a smooth song, yet interesting. I didn’t expect you to sound so young… Just hearin’ your voice makes me think, “How are you in jail?” Although okay lyrics and feelin’ bad about not havin’ “wheels,” this ain’t really for me at all. I wish I had some “wheels” too ‘cause I can’t get anywhere, especially during tha late afternoon/evening! My Rating: 2.7

02. “Young & Embarrassed”
Why would you come up wit a title like that? Iz it ‘cause your voice? IDK… >>> Better song for me; I like that beat! It actually sounds true like tha 1st song for me wit what’s goin’ on. I felt “embarrassed” at a young age (mainly during my teens) due to there was no Louisiana connection for me, and I didn’t have people on my side. Well, kinda not my style to like a lot, but it’s better than tha last song. Good lyrics about your stories about trying to prevent embarrassment. My Rating: 3.4

03. “You Gets Nothin’”
What to expect… >>> Good featured person in tha hook, as well as on tha 2nd verse. I don’t like tha vocals on tha 3rd verse (whoeva that iz)… Ended kinda fast… There wasn’t really anything to say, so I can’t say anything. My Rating: 2.5

04. “Cleo”
I like tha name, so I hope I like tha song! >>> I thought I would have more interest, but I have a feelin’ this’ll be tha best song on this tape… Weird if it iz, but w/e. Tha 2nd verse was real interesting wit tha unexpected anticipation of you “urinin’ on yourself,” as well as anticipating tha listener for tha 3rd verse when you say (at tha end of tha 2nd verse), “wait ‘til tha next verse.” Not bad song here. My Rating: 3.7

05. “The Mind”
How will you follow up that last song? >>> Tha “It Takes Two” type of beat sample here… Good flow here, and tha rhymes are great. Turned out to be a ½ way decent song, even though I didn’t say much. My Rating: 3.6

06. “Groovie Mellow”
I have a good feeling I ain’t gonna like this one… >>> Actually, not bad for a start; nice beat. I like that there’s no hook (and just music). Again, I like tha “’til tha next verse” ending to tha 2nd verse. It makes great anticipation for tha average person listenin’! Tha 3rd verse iz soundin’ real great to hear too! Great rappin’ on this verse! This one actually beat tha “Cleo” song for my rating, so good job, and good rappin’ too! My Rating: 3.9

½time: I expected a better start, but we’re not in tha 90’s yet, so I guess that’s why. A lil’ for tha younger people, but I guess that’s why my interest lacks at times. I wonder what to expect on tha 2nd ½…

07. “Lyrical Midget”
It’s a title track, hopefully a tight track! Do yo thang on this! >>> This sounds much BETTER than tha 1st ½ of this tape; great “lyrical” rappin’ here wit your rhymes (for your age)! Good “let it flow through ya mind like a fluid” line in tha 2nd verse. Even startin’ off in tha 3rd verse, you were deliverin’ fiya! My Rating: 4.2

08. “Your Days Are Over”
Looks like a tough title! >>> Looks like this iz tha “lyrical side” of tha tape ‘cause this joint iz also rapid fire wit tha rappin’! Great fast beat wit tha real fast rappin’! And even throughout tha 2nd verse, still keepin’ it fast! REAL GREAT 3rd verse too; better than tha last song on here! Oh, and that’s cool that you have Gregory D checkin’ in at tha end. I reviewed 2 of his CDs (wit Mannie Fresh) before this one. My Rating: 4.3

09. “You Can’t Receive Me”
Anotha tough title, so maybe I’m anticipated finally! >>> I don’t know what to say about this one… Nothin’ really to say about tha rhymes (reminds me more of tha 1st ½ of tha tape). It’s great to see an 11 year-old like you put out shit though. I don’t really have anymore feedback; nothin’ bad though. My Rating: 3.0

10. “Gangster Groove”
Not “gangsta”, lol? I wonder how hard you’ll go on this. >>> Good lil’ groove here, but not as exciting as some of tha previous jointz on here. My Rating: 3.1

11. “Disco Jam”
I don’t know what I might expect from this one… >>> LOL @ that guy in tha beginning wit “it’s tha disco…, baby!” LOL @ spelling “dance.” I liked tha 2nd verse on this joint; great rappin’ overall. I like how you ended tha 3rd verse; good sign-off. Odd hook, but tha rhymes gave tha credit it here. Good job on Mannie Fresh at tha end. My Rating: 3.7

12. “Lil’ Mac Be Clubbin’”
To end it off, it looks like tha party-type feel iz ending tha tape… >>> More of tha party-type of tha beat here. Gregory D in tha beginning (reminds me of his type of beats that I heard). Not bad 1st verse. LOL @ tha “6+5=11” part in tha hook; really, right? LOL. It sounds like Eminem wit tha “Lil’ Mac, get busy!” part, lol! I like tha 2nd verse wit “checkin’ your Rolex, and it bein’ 4:01.” LOL @ tha lady after tha 2nd verse wit tha “ya heard me;” gotta LUV hearin’ that slang during tha ‘80s! Okay 3rd verse, although it sounds like you got brutally beaten. Nice evening vibe BTW. My Rating: 3.4

Overall: Well, not that interesting of a listenin’ experience, but it sounds like by tha time I get to more recent stuff of yours, it might lay off tha younger topics, and get better!
