Review #1,711: Kenn Sonnier "It Won't Be Long"

Reviewed on 4.25.2017 (Review #1,711)

Here comes my next review. Actually, I was notified about this as early as last year, on August 14. However, workin’ so hard and losin’ interest in Louisiana music, at times, delayed me… Now, since my trip, last month, my interest has regained itself. I’m ready to review Lafayette’s Kenn Sonnier, who was featured on Baton Rouge’s YB’s Dedication Of Honor CD, back in 2015. Here’s his effort, It Won’t Be Long, sponsored by Forever Young Entertainment & Self-Explanatory Entertainment! Each song was produced by $hop With Ken, except tha 1st track, which was produced by Mikki Gunz… Start Time: 5:08 PM | End Time: 5:37 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> “ iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> “ iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. “Foreign” feat. YB
>>> An okay beat but I’m ready for tha Ken ones… Hearin’ tha hook and I wanna say it’s okay but at tha same time, it sounds like tha mainstream bullshit I don’t fuck wit (once I hear “money,” that’s it!)… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it sounds like you’re financially stable? This whateva; this beat ain’t Louisiana fa me, as well… I’ono why, but I kinda like tha 2nd verse a lil’ betta… Has, like, a YB feel to it, fa me… My Rating: 2.8

02. “Finesse On My Wrist”
>>> You missin’ an “S” in tha title! Anyway, a lil’ betta wit tha production, here; an okay hook… Hearin’ tha verse and really, “20 dayz, no sleep?” I want your energy! I have energy but I actually “sleep,” sadly… An okay verse, here; gotta get used to your music… It sounds like you’re too much on a mainstream level, here… Bleh, one verse? Not enough to make me really like it… My Rating: 3.1

03. “Barbarian”
>>> Nice lil’ slow beat from Ken, here, and an okay hook wit you just rappin’ ‘bout random shit, here… Hearin’ tha verse and you just spittin’ random shit, here… Just random rhymes, here… I’ono if you’re completely focused… It just seems like you wanna rap about tha same shit that err-body in tha mainstream raps about… I can’t dig this as much as I wanna dig it… And, anotha one wit one verse… It’s cool that some of these songs are short but there’s no chance for more… My Rating: 2.4

04. “One Time”
>>> Really likin’ tha Ken beat start, here… Hope you don’t ruin it with random ‘money’ lyrics… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it a lil’ betta… I hear some Louisiana rhymes (I heard “Baton Rouge” and I heard “New Orleans,” so that’s a start…), so that’s good… Tha hook’s that nice beat sample that I’m really feelin’; nice… We actually have a 2nd verse, here, and it sounds good… This was tha best one, so far; let’s see if you can top it! My Rating: 3.7

05. “808 Bandit”
>>> More heat from Ken, here… Hearin’ tha hook, which I thought was tha verse, and this sounds like betta quality, here… Hearin’ tha verse and it ain’t bad, here… Ehh, only one verse; okay… My Rating: 3.4

½time: Only a 3.1-rated CD, so far; that’s on tha weak side… Most of tha tracks don’t have that Louisiana vibe in tha content/lyrics fa me… You have more of a tryna-be-mainstream feel to your music, which iz not what I’m ‘bout. Only thing that keepin’ this poppin’, a lil’, iz tha Ken beats…

06. “Trust A Lil’”
>>> A nice beat wit a decent hook… Hearin’ tha verse and it aight; nothin’ too-too special, here… Only one verse, once again… My Rating: 3.3

07. “Bout Yo Paper”
>>> I have a feelin’ this gon be bad… Not anticipatin’ tha title and tha sampled hook… Hearin’ tha verse and it ain’t as bad as I thought it was gon be… I think this a lil’ below-average fa me, mainly ‘cause of tha money content… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and tha thought of “loratabs and xanabarz” got me makin’ me wanna feel this more… I’ll just say that it’s betta than tha 1st verse. Still, I love how there’s two verses on this song ‘cause it’s a money song, smh… My Rating: 2.9

08. “No Pretendin’” feat. Nigga D
>>> A smooth lil’ Ken beat, here; not bad… I’ono if I feel tha sample in tha background but it’s betta than money bullshit, I guess… Hearin’ you on tha 1st verse and it’s off to a nice start… I’ono, you sounded kinda random wit tha flow and lyrics toward tha end of tha verse, tho… Hearin’ dat Nigga D on tha 2nd verse and I’m diggin’ tha beginning of his verse; dope flow… Feelin’ his Louisiana vibe on this track; good shit… Overall, a decent lil’ track, I must say… My Rating: 3.5

09. “F.Y.N.I.C.” feat. YB
>>> Ain’t realize I heard this one already till I heard YB was on both tha 1st verse and hook… I know you said you were featured on YB’s CD but I ain’t think it was gon be a repeat song… My Current Rating: 4.1

10. “Shout Out” feat. YB
>>> This a repeat, too; you really gettin’ tha bonuses today! My Current Rating: 4.6

11. “Lingo”
>>> Sounds like a nice, slow beat, here… Hearin’ tha verse and it’s bleh… I’m not gonna die for this… I just hear all tha typical, mainstream-soundin’ bullshit and it just goes in one ear and out tha other… My Rating: 2.6

Overall: Unfortunately, it wasn’t tha best CD I reviewed… One good thing about it was it didn’t drag and I was surprised it was seconds less than a half-hour long… I still feel like you can slowly have potential if you just stick wit Louisiana content, rather than tha mainstream bullshit that’s out today… It’s good that you fucks wit $hop With Ken & YB, tho; it helps you get out there… But yeah, work on avoidin’ tha mainstream, brainwashin’ bullshit that err-body be on…
