Review #1,870: Lay-Lo "Simple & Plain"

Reviewed on 12.15.2019 (Review #1,870)

As I keep this marathon of reviewz comin’ along, here comes Lay-Lo Simple & Plain, released in 1999 on Crushed Entertainment & was produced by Happy Perez! Also, for those that don’t know, Lay-Lo iz a group from Baton Rouge; it consists of Max Minelli & J-Von…! Start Time: 3:23 PM | End Time: 4:10 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

>>> Beat’s pretty nice, here; all about da south! Hearin’ Max on tha 1st verse and it’s pretty dope, holdin’ shit down as a 20-year-old! Hook sounds pretty nice; yeah, “bump [Max’s] shit so [y’all] don’t want no trouble!” Puttin’ it daawn nicely! As this continues, we got J-Von on tha 2nd verse, comin’ through wit his nice shit; good shit…! My Rating: 4.3

>>> This a nicely-put production, here; gotta keep it movin’! Bleed on tha 1st verse, comin’ through wit his facts; facts! Tha 2nd part of tha 1st verse turns out ta be Max, comin’ through fa tha “game” at all times! Good shit! Here comes anotha part of tha 1st verse (3rd) from J-Von, comin’ through wit nice shit. Likin’ all tha voices collabin’ together, as well as tha hook (I think?) & good beat sounds! As this continues wit J-Von, it sounds nice, as well as it throwin’ back ta Max, too. Endin’ wit some Bleed, as well; good shit! My Rating: 4.5

06. “Take It Like A Gee”
>>> Beat sounds like a simple, regular-soundin’ southern beat fa tha ‘90s, here; not bad… Hearin’ Max on tha 1st verse and I’m diggin’ what he spittin’ fa these streetz, here; good shit. Tha hook sounds pretty nice wit tha both of y’all; all about dem “Gee” facts! Frfr! Got J on tha 2nd verse, here, comin’ through wit mo good shit fa these 225 streetz… My Rating: 4.0

07. “Crushed”
>>> Anotha decent-soundin’ beat, here… Hearin’ tha 1st verse from tha both of y’all & it sounds pretty nice; can’t complain, here… Hearin’ tha hook and it sounds good; I’ll give it its props… Keepin’ it movin’ wit Von on tha 2nd verse, here, as he “tha lightning” & “Max tha thunda;” true shocks! Max on tha 2nd part of tha 2nd verse, comin’ through wit good shit, as always… Hearin’ tha flow of tha hook, again & it sounds like this remakes Mobb Deep & their “Shook Ones”, from earlier in tha ‘90s; dope… My Rating: 4.3

½time: Von, Max & Happy P bringin’ tha heat, here! Definitely a classic from 20 years ago! A 4.3-rated album, so far; keep bringin’ dat fiya!!

08. “Dirty Game”
>>> Nice lil’ laidback, southern-soundin’ beat, here… Hearin’ J-Von on tha 1st verse, as he comes through wit some good shit fa Baton Rouge in ’99… Nice lil’ singin’ flow on tha hook, here; all about survivin’ da “Dirty Game!” Mo shit from J on tha 2nd verse, here, comin’ through wit rhymes you can’t deny; gotta dig it… Mo shit from Lay on tha 3rd verse, here, comin’ through wit good shit; nice job… My Rating: 4.0

09. “Simple & Plain”
>>> Beat a lil’ betta than “plain,” here… Hearin’ Max on tha 1st verse and he sound good; diggin’ what he spittin’ fa tha south… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s cool; all about bein’ “Simple & Plain,” like tha album’s title…! Got J-Von on tha 2nd verse, here, “shmokin’ wit Minelli;” that’s what’s up… I had my share of Max Minelliness, at Greg Dukes’ studio, on March 27, 2017:
Also, we got a nice lil’ beat outro that’s over a minute long, here; nice… My Rating: 4.1

10. “Catfishing”
Here we go, 13 years b4 Catfish: The TV Show! >>> Sounds nice ta hear, wit this beat & J-Von on tha verse… That hook’s pretty dope; feelin’ that singin’ a lot! Lol @ how he says, “Catfishing;” all about tha “water,” tho! My Rating: 4.3

11. “Better Than Tha Last Time II”
>>> Sounds like a nice lil’ beat fa tha south, once again… Max on tha 1st verse, comin’ through as a winner at all times; good shit! Tha hook sounds nice, as tha real comin’ out… Mo shit from Max on tha 2nd verse, here, soundin’ nice ta hear; keep it up! A lil’ outro wit some shout outs, here; good shit… My Rating: 4.0

12. Feared Or Loved
>>> All about makin’ ‘em fear you & be “loved!” My Rating: N/A

13. “Dedicated” feat. Boo
>>> Sounds like an okay beat & what Max has fa tha 1st verse, here. Hearin’ tha hook and it’s soundin’ okay; I feel what you got goin’ on, Max… Here comes J-Von on tha 2nd verse, comin’ through wit some nice shit fa these real-life headz… Got this dude, Boo, on tha 3rd verse, comin’ through wit some good shit, as well; nice… My Rating: 3.8

14. “Ghetto Gospel”
>>> An okay beat, here; good shit from Max on tha 1st verse, here… J-Von on tha 2nd part of tha 1st verse, here, soundin’ good ta contribute, as always… Tha hook sounds empowering, though a lil’ too gospelish fa me… Now, a prayer & it’s over, with 5:41 left? A hidden track comin’? Yup…! Sounds screwed? Sounds nice… I feel what’s goin’ on, here… Was gonna rate tha “Ghetto Gospel” track a 3.6 & with this screwed vibe, I was gonna rate it a 4.2. With them combinin’, it’s a 3.9, overall… My Rating: 3.9

Overall: Y’all did a nice job wit this one, of course! Plenty of Max remaining in my Louisiana Reviewz Marathon, as I slowly review tha rest of tha Louisiana archive of albums! Great job wit P on dem beatz, as well as what Max & Von brought to tha tablez…!
