Review #695: J-Von a.k.a. Jimmy Mack "The Musical Ovadoz"

Reviewed on 12.18.2010 (Review #695)

Haven’t been havin’ ANY luck wit most of these reviewz I’ve been reviewin’! Nothin’ but a waste of time! Hopefully, this next CD can help resurrect where I original was—quality wise! Here goes my review for J-Von a.k.a. Jimmy Mack “The Musical Ovadoz; pretty anticipated!! Start Time: 5:11 PM | End Time: 6:04 PM

Quick Note: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion!! I only please myself wit my ratings!! I don’t care how lyrical you are! As long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much REALLY LOVE it as it’s considered “mindblowin’” when I hear it. Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song. Anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it.

01. Intro
Let’s see what’s up!! >>> Kinda low on tha volume but good start. WTH? Tha gunshot was loud as hell? My Rating: N/A

02. “What You Niggaz Wanna Do” Feat. Shell The Yung Thugga
Shit yea!! >>> Sounds good; finally, some HOT music today and this iz tha 5th review for tha day! Gutta shit you spittin’, Mr. J-Von! Tha production’s definitely on an A – A+ level; keepin’ it 225 to tha fullest!! Nice contribution from Shell and tha hot hook, too! Shell doin’ a nice job on tha 2nd verse; glad he speakin’ fa himself and only himself! Ooh, a 3rd verse from you; you bringin’ dat hot shit to tha table, boy! My Rating: 4.6

03. “Major Weight”
Keepin’ it goin’!! >>> Tha beginning reminds me of some 90’s Louisiana Rap wit what you be spittin’ ‘bout; interestin’ shit! Tha hook’s pretty tight; consistency at its finest! My Rating: 4.3

04. “Smell My Cologne”
>>> Decent song; okay production and interestin’ concept. My Rating: 3.7

05. “Fresh Out The Plastic”
Let’s hear how much you “fresh out tha plastic”, 2010 style. >>> Good rappin’ ova dis Southern-styled beat; you doin’ ya thang. Tha hook’s pretty nice; definitely on a “fresh” level. My Rating: 4.1

06. “Dead In The Ground”
Interestin’ title; how will it apply? >>> Not tha kinda beat I would’ve expected so let’s see how you can rap to it… An okay song; sounds more like 90’s style here, which iz good. You got tha rhymes on lock. My Rating: 3.8

07. “J.I. Double M. Y.”
Interestin’; let’s get it!! >>> Another odd beat start? Good rhymes, though. Tha hook iz pretty catchy wit your name goin’ ‘round and ‘round. My Rating: 3.6

½time: Pretty good shit right chea; a lil’ mix wit tha beats, though. So far, this CD’s at a 4.0; let’s keep it goin’!

08. “Dance With Ya”
This wasn’t included when I downloaded it? I had to rip it to hear it. >>> Another different beat; slowed down version of Angie Stone’s beat… Tha hook’s a lil’ odd for a Louisiana CD; I’d prolly expect it from a mainstream artist or somethin’. Other than that, this iz a pretty good slow jam, on a different level. My Rating: 3.4

09. “9 Millimeter Boys (Rebirth)”
Looks interestin’; let’s see what’s up… >>> Sounds pretty good here, almost like a Savage-type song. I like tha start to tha 2nd verse; good shit here… My Rating: 4.0

10. “Too Fresh”
>>> Production sounds pretty hot in tha beginning; good shit! Hook came outta nowhere and sounds pretty good; interestin’… My Rating: 3.9

11. “Off The Rip”
Let’s see what dis ‘bout. >>> An acapella rap; sounds tight. Tha “raping my sluts” shit sounds gross and greedy/gay. A beat was added more than 50% into tha song and sounds tight! Now, if dat beat was on one of tha other longer songs, dat would be tight! My Rating: 4.2

12. “Dramatime”
Looks like it gon be tight… >>> Has, like, a 90’s feel to tha beat and sounds pretty good here. Nice shit, keepin’ it at a quality level. My Rating: 4.3

13. “Undercool”
You doin’ a nice job here, Jimmy; let’s keep it goin’! >>> Not tha kinda beat I wanted, especially ta sit fa nearly five minutes; you betta make it interestin’. Took close ta 40 seconds fa tha rappin’ ta start… Not bad for a song; tha hook’s kinda catchy… Tha length of this iz makin’ me bored; sorry. My Rating: 3.5

14. “Purple Drank, Purple Smoke”
Hope this iz tight; it looks like it… >>> Too bad dis iz an under-three-minute song. You sound tight on this slow-ass beat wit a nearly-screwed-and-chopped voice. Dis iz definitely kick-ass; it’s ALWAYS GR8 ta have a “smokin’”-type song on your CD! I just really like how it’s really slow and dat REAL Southern shit I knew tha Dirty South for! My Rating: 4.4

15. “Mr. Sandman”
Looks like it gon be catchy; let’s hear it! >>> Damn, anotha short song? These are tha kinda songs dat shouldn’t’ve been short. Sounds like Biggie in tha beginning? DEFINITELY catchy shit here!! Sounds like a younger J-Von; wonder how old dis iz…? Definitely nice job wit tha rappin’ and tha hook’s pretty nice; good shit! What happened to tha ending? It just randomly cut off? My Rating: 4.3

Overall: A pretty good CD from you, Jimmy. Prolly would’ve been more happy if it was more on a Baton Rouge style wit tha production. Other than that, you pretty much held it down wit your rhymes and holdin’ it down over a decade later!
