Review #1,543: Felony "Gansta Tail"

Reviewed on 9.26.2016 (Review #1,543)

Randomly fell asleep; not diggin’ this cold weather… Now, lemme get this 3rd review done so I can put out my latest tri-weekly playlist… Felony Gansta Tail iz my next review, released in 1995 on Tombstone Records & was produced by Merrill “Real Roc” Robinson! A rare Tombstone release with an unintention of spellin’ “tale” wrong… I’m prolly tha only one in tha U.S. that has access ta review this!! Start Time: 4:20 PM | End Time: 4:33 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> “ iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> “ iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. “Gangsta Tail”
What gon come outta dis?! >>> R.I.P. my late great-grandma! Her old vinyl/cassette-to-CD recorder!! Tha beat has that ‘de-de-de-de-din-din…” or whateva you wanna call that beat (not tha bounce beat from “Triggerman”). It sounds nice ta hear wit you on this, deliverin’ those bounce vibes! Great job wit tha 1st verse and tha hook’s nice wit tha “5-0 on [yo] back!” Tha 2nd verse’s soundin’ nice; beat definitely sounds pure! It has that anthemic vibe ta just hold thangz down! Wonder what had happened to ya? Why only just this rare release? No other music? Where are you today? Tha 3rd verse’s pretty energetic, too; can’t deny dis!! My Rating: 4.4

02. “Boys In Blue”
Crippin’!! >>> Nice siren in tha beginning, here… A nice, eerie beat, here… Remakin’ Inner Circle’s “Bad Boys” on tha hook, here, and it’s soundin’ real nice fa a crip version—well, that’s what I call it! Tha 1st verse’s soundin’ nice ta hear; definitely jammin’! Definitely classic!! Good shit comin’ outta tha 2nd verse, too, strictly comin’ through fa tha hood at all times!! Nice job wit tha 3rd verse, here, as you’re comin’ through wit dem lyrics fa tha streetz! Can’t deny your energy and your street cred, here! Still, where are you today?! My Rating: 4.4

03. “Hustler”
H.U.S.T.L.I.N.G.!! >>> Beat sounds like a party; nice start, here… Beat has Tom Tom Club “Genius Of Love” sampled in it, this time… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and you got shit on lock! Can’t deny it! Good shit! Great anthem fa dem hustlaz, on tha hook! You really holdin’ it down! Rhymes got it goin’ on, too, on tha 2nd verse! Hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it’s soundin’ energetic as a ma’fucka, as always! Undeniable, of course!! My Rating: 4.3

04. “Boys In Blue (Radio)”
Yeah… See #2 fa tha review!

½time: Sounds like an excellent release fa an artist I barely have heard anything from! Great job wit these beats and this hidden aggression from tha N.O.! Great job! You held tha streetz down wit dis one! A 4.4-rated tape, at tha moment!

05. “Gangsta Tail (Radio)”
See #1 fa tha review!

06. “Boys In Blue (Instrumental)”
Nice dat tha instrumentals are on here! See #2 fa tha review!

07. “Hustler (Instrumental)”
Nice, again! See #3 fa tha review!

08. “Gangsta Tail (Instrumental)”
Whoot! See #1 fa tha review!

Overall: Great job!! Nice ta have some radio edits and instrumentals on this thang, too, despite me not havin’ my radio show, anymore. Still, ya neva know! They may come in handy! Great job wit your “Gansta Tail” that you provided to tha world, in only three songs! What else more can I say?

R.I.P. Video #31: Elton "June" Wicker, Jr. (Tombstone Records President)

From tha cemetery in Peckville, PA, it's FrankieThaLuckyDog here, remembering a legend in tha undaground, Louisiana rap game today. Today, April 25, 2014, marks 16 years since tha untimely murder of Elton "June" Wicker, Jr., tha president of Tombstone Records. A New Orleans native, Wicker attended Joseph S. Clark High School and Americo Technical Institute, as well as working at Southern Scrap and Popeyes's Chicken & Biscuits. While working, he had a dream of creating a record label. His dream came true when he formed Tombstone Records, which was named after tha George P. Cosmatos film. Tha dream continued to expand when he founded tha Tombstone Basketball League and Cool Spot Baseball League. Wicker was also a volunteer for tha Goretti Saints.

Wicker was a member of tha New Orleans rap group, Da Mobstas, with High Top, Lil' Boo & Y.G.. In total, Tombstone Records had eight releases: In 1994, Da Mobstas' Tripple Beam; in 1995, Cheeky Blakk's Let Me Get That Outcha, Felony's Gansta Tail, Lokee's I Got Dis; in 1996, 2 Blakk's Represent 4 Life, Cheeky Blakk's Fuck Bein' Faithful, L.O.G.'s G's & Soldiers & Lokee's Voodoo Gangsta Funk. Most of tha production on Tombstone was provided by Merrill "Real Roc" Robinson, while additional production was provided by DJ Tee, Ice Mike, Lokee & Mannie Fresh.

Tombstone became in jeopardy on November 14, 1997, when vice president of tha label, Sandy "Patrick" Price, Jr., was shot and killed in New Orleans at only 23 years-old. Then, sadly, on April 25, 1998, just as Wicker was exiting Roosevelt's on North Claiborne, he was approached by a stranger who asked for a light. While being approached, a drive-by shooter sprayed bullets, killing Wicker at only 32 years-old. Wicker has two kids: A son, Elton Wicker III, and a daughter, Kerrionne Wicker. Elton "June" Wicker would've been 48 if he was still alive today.

After Wicker's death, Tombstone was transformed into DangerZone Entertainment, which had three releases: In 1998, II Loaded's Don't Play No Games!; in 2001, Busbak's Retaliation; and, in 2003, All Night Flightaz Dat Drama. All Night Flightaz iz a supergroup that consists of JMD, Busbak & II Loaded.
