Review #1,571: Juvenile "Solja Rags"

Reviewed on 10.06.2016 (Review #1,571)

I have one review to get to until I get caught up with where I left off on, throughout my Louisiana Reviewz Marathon. This one’s Juvenile Solja Rags, released in 1997 on Cash Money Records & Universal Records & was produced by Mannie Fresh! Dealin’ with a lotta depression, right now, as still, at 28 years-old, I can get on tha phone & have them tell me to, “Hold on,” for 17 minutes and then, say they’re callin’ me back! I’m sick of not bein’ important; hate everything!!! Start Time: 3:59 PM | End Time: 5:28 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> “ iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> “ iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. Ziggly Wiggly
>>> Sounds good, even tho now-a-dayz, Ziggly sounds more energetic and aggressive than this! Diggin’ this fa a “solja” intro! My Rating: N/A

02. “Solja Rag”
>>> Beat sounds nice ta hear, here, as it’s jammin’ fa tha hood… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s soundin’ jammin’ ta hear… I know I done heard this before but my mood’s all thrown off from that phone call, so I’m just gonna chill and listen to tha music… Hearin’ tha hook and this definitely tha “solja” anthem, here! Even keepin’ it goin’ on tha 2nd verse, here; anthemic at its finest! I like how tha beginning of tha 3rd verse later turned into part of “Ha”, lol… My Rating: 4.4

03. “I Did That” feat. B.G. & Big Moe
>>> I thought this was gon sound slower ‘cause of Big Moe bein’ on tha feature, but it’s jammin’, soundin’ nice, like tha previous joint… Hearin’ you on tha 1st verse and it’s good ta hear, of course! Hearin’ tha hook and it almost sounds like Boosie? An uncredited feature? Even more of this comin’ out; doesn’t sound like B.G. or Big Moe… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it ain’t too bad… Now, tha 3rd verse sounds like B.G. and it’s soundin’ nice ta hear, here… It’s all about bein’ a “baby gangsta,” here, teenage style… Iz that dude on tha hook and 2nd verse Big Moe? Don’t even sound like Big Moe; weird feature… My Rating: 4.0

04. “Roll Wit ‘Em” feat. Big Tymers
>>> Beat sounds nice ta hear, as it continues ta deliver a hood vibe fa this CD… Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it’s pretty nice, keepin’ it gangsta… Tha hook sounds nice ta hear, here; good shit… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and it ain’t too bad, here… Tha 3rd verse Mannie Fresh and it soundin’ cool ta flow through this track, here… And, tha 2nd ½ of tha 3rd verse’s you, comin’ through fa tha hood, once again… My Rating: 4.1

05. “Pimpinabitch”
>>> Even more of a jam, here, as tha beat’s faster fa tha hood! Hearin’ tha 1st verse and you holdin’ it down, consistently! Tha hook’s pretty nice, as you rattle tha title off; pimp-in’!! Tha 2nd verse’s keepin’ this goin’, as it’s slowly endin’? Wow, how quick! My Rating: 4.4

06. “Livin’ In The Project”
>>> Beat sounds slower, here, but still holdin’ it down fa tha hood at all times!! Nice job wit tha 1st verse, here; gotta luv what you spittin’! Hood teacher, here! Mr. Juve! My Rating: 4.2

07. “Who’s The M.F.”
>>> Beat ain’t too bad, here, but I’m feelin’ what you got goin’ on throughout tha 1st verse… I’m diggin’ tha hook, here, as we’re questionin’ who “the M.F.” iz! Hearin’ tha 2nd verse and you doin’ a nice job wit it, as well; can’t complain! You got this shit on lock, consistently! And, good shit goin’ on wit tha 3rd verse, as well; can’t complain… My Rating: 4.3

½time: For bein’ so aggravated & fucked-up in tha head, I have ta say, this CD’s real consistent, here! Definitely feelin’ every track’s upbeat vibes, where they’re mainly for tha hood, here! A 4.2-rated CD; good shit! Keep tha shit goin’ fa tha hood, Juve!

08. “Hide Out Or Ride Out” feat. Lil’ Wayne & Turk
>>> Good shit on tha 1st verse, here, from Turk? Naw, it’s Wayne… Their voices so young, almost can’t tell… Either way, good shit! Hearin’ tha hook and it’s pretty nice; gotta feel it! Hearin’ you on tha 2nd verse and it sounds good ta hear, here… Aight, it iz Turk on tha 3rd verse! Almost thought he was on tha 1st verse, due to their young voices… Just like Wayne’s verse, this still sounds nice ta hear; gangsta shit at its finest! And, even more from you, here; nice! My Rating: 4.2

09. “Spittin’ Game” feat. Hot Boy$
>>> Sounds good wit tha beat and how tha Hot Boy$ are comin’ through on tha 1st verse, here… And, keepin’ it goin’ with this shit on tha 2nd verse, strictly spittin’ fa “dat Nolia,” of course… You’re doin’ a nice job wit this shit, as well, Juve… I ain’t know they had tha term, “Dope dick,” back then; a Juve discovery? Was it a decade before its time? Seems like a long track without a hook, from what I heard, but it ain’t that bad… My Rating: 3.7

10. “3rd World Solja” feat. Big Tymers & Magnolia Shorty
>>> This ain’t too bad of an upbeat vibe fa tha 5-0-4… Hearin’ you on tha 1st verse and it’s decent, here… Hearin’ tha hook from you (iz it? Distorted?) and it’s aight… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse from you and you got this continuin’… Tha 3rd verse’s soundin’ nice, here, as Mannie’s “wearin’ Girbaud jeans,” feelin’ fresh like his name; nice! Got tha Shorty on tha 2nd ½ of tha 3rd verse, here, comin’ through, reppin’ hard fa tha N’awlinz hood, of course! My Rating: 4.0

11. “Welcome 2 Tha Section” feat. B.G. & Bullet Proof
>>> Kickin’ it off with this semi-eerie beat and B.G. on tha 1st verse, comin’ through, nicely… Tha hook ain’t too bad, here, holdin’ it down… Hearin’ tha 2nd verse from Bullet Proof, here, comin’ through, representin’ like a Hot Boy should! And, here you are on tha 3rd verse, comin’ through, nicely fa “tha section,” here. My Rating: 4.1

12. “Money On The Couch”
>>> Not bad with tha beat, here, as you’re holdin’ tha south down… Hearin’ you on tha 1st verse and it’s not bad, here… Hearin’ tha hook and it’s decent; I get it! You want tha “money!” Good job with tha 2nd verse, here; what more can I say? Tha 3rd verse ain’t too bad, here; diggin’ tha beat, as it reminds me of Morganza, LA rapper, P.I.R.’s music… My Rating: 3.9

13. “That’s How It Be Happenin’”
>>> Hearin’ tha hook and it sounds like one of those catchy anthems with tha repeatin’ title; good shit. Hearin’ tha 1st verse and it ain’t too bad, here; nice rappin’… Good shit goin’ on wit tha 2nd verse; scary about tha “heroin,” tho… Hearin’ tha 3rd verse and it’s all about what “be happenin’” wit tha drugs and shit… And, anotha verse, here, as you keepin’ this shit goin’; unstoppable!! My Rating: 4.4

14. “Solja Rag (Radio Version)”
See #2 fa tha review!

Overall: I thought you did an excellent job wit this one, Juve! Definitely a classic fa tha N.O. streetz! Beats were consistent and so were your hood tales! Keep up tha great work, as you always do! There’s plenty more in this marathon from you!!

01. “Hoodstar”
Produced by DJ BlaqNMild (I always forget how to exactly stylize his name). Looks like a familiar title? Looks like it’s in my iTunes already, only this iz featureless. My Current Rating: 4.4

02. “Dopeman”
Blaq N Mild again! >>> I think this iz a newbie fa me; once again, sounds like anotha anthem. My Rating: 4.2

03. “That’s My Bitch”
Blaq N Mild… >>> Kinda like 50/50 for me; not really 100% my style, since it sounds automatic/cocky, but it has a lil’ bit of some good shit goin’ on from Blaq on tha beat… My Rating: 3.7

04. “My Balls & My Word” Feat. Roca B
Production from Street King. Previously heard; why no features listed? This iz featurin’ Roca B! My Current Rating: 4.4

05. “Who Do I Trust”
Blaq on tha beat, again! >>> Good 504, street-type beat from Blaq, here; good shit from you wit tha rhymes, too. Kinda surprised dat you don’t hit me up like crazy, or even have done business wit me, yet; I’m loyal to tha bone! You should be obsessed! My Rating: 4.1

06. “Big Dawg” Feat. Ceto
LOL, a feature listed, this time? Anotha good collaboration, courtesy of Blaq on tha beat, again! My Current Rating: 4.7

07. “Keep It 100”
Looks like an old title, but Blaq N Mild on tha beat… >>> Good; nothin’ much ta say, since it’s like your other anthems… My Rating: 4.2

08. “Uptown” Feat. B.G.
Anotha huge one that’s featured on here; thanx, Blaq, for doin’ a great track!! My Current Rating: 4.6

½time: I think this iz a pretty consistent mixtape, once again; can’t eva stop!! A 4.3-rated mixtape, currently!!!

09. “Mo Money, No Problems”
Street King doin’ his thang on tha beat, still! My Current Rating: 4.2

10. “New Orleans” Feat. Ceto
I believe it’s a.k.a. “Welcome To New Orleans”… My Current Rating: 4.6

11. “Daily Prayer” Feat. Mr. Marcelo & Cutta
? >>> Not really my style; semi-tight, at times, though, and at least there’s good rhymes goin’ on from everyone… Everything sounds like it could be one of tha 2012 big songs in tha streetz, except for some of tha hook’s samp—ah, I’m thinkin’ it’s really catchy, now! My Rating: 4.3

12. “Maintaining” Feat. KIs
Ooh, some drugs on tha feature, lol, as well as a beat from Street King! Oh wait, heard this already! My Current Rating: 4.5

13. “I Gotta Make It”
LOL, goin’ backwards wit tha tracklisting from Ghetto Hero, lol? My Current Rating: 4.4

14. “Superish” Feat. Ceto & Mr. Marcelo
Knew this sounded familiar once tha beat kicked in…; once again, produced by Street King! My Current Rating: 4.3

15. “My Ghetto” Feat. B.G.
Beat Doctor beat! >>> Sounds like regular 504 productions; nothin’ really special… Not too much into tha hook, although it sounds like a good anthem for tha trap starz… Good job from tha both of you guys wit your verses (you, two; B.G., tha 3rd verse), as y’all’re holdin’ it down… My Rating: 3.6

16. “My First Love”
Blaq N Mild beat. >>> Avant/Keke Wyant song in 2011? Not really likin’ that tha hook has a high-pitched, female voice, now; when will producers give dat dumb shit up? Rhymes aight, but nothin’ I’d die for… My Rating: 2.9

17. “I’m On Fire (Bounce Mix)” Feat. Magnolia Shorty
Ooh, I wanna hear it wit Magnolia Shorty on tha feature!! Even, got Blaq on tha beat ta end it off!! >>> Yes, normal, bounce music, finally; sounds consistent and identified, unlike most music today, where tha music world’s an identity crisis: everyone from everywhere has tha same sound!! I hear Magnolia Shorty…; she’s just in tha background? Pretty disappointin’; couldn’t be like Soulja Slim and have, like, words and words in tha hook or somethin’? Nice ending, though; how “on fire” it was, lol! My Rating: 4.5

Overall: A nice lil’ update from tha previous Ghetto Hero, but slightly, in a negative way, since tha average CD rating went down by 1/10. But, good job…

Rankings:

Review #1,024: Magnolia Shorty "Monkey On Tha Dick"

Reviewed on 7.09.2011 (Review #1,024)

I have anotha CD wit only six songs up next: Magnolia Shorty “Monkey On Tha Dick! Too bad I didn’t realize this was from ’96; I would’ve reviewed it last year, while she was still alive (same thing wit Tre-8 comin’ up)! :cry But, you know I have a passion for Magnolia Shorty now!! Start Time: 9:51 AM | End Time: 10:01 AM

Quick Note: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion!! I only please myself wit my ratings!! I don’t care how lyrical you are! As long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much REALLY LOVE it as it’s considered “mindblowin’” when I hear it. Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song. Anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it.

01. Manny Fresh (Cash Money Style)
Not spelled as “Mannie” (like he spells it, currently)? Since it’s only a minute long, I assume it’s just an intro, anyway… >>> Good intro from Mannie, here; preparin’ real nice fa you, Shorty!! My Rating: N/A

02. “Monkey On Tha Dick”
I actually luv tha clean version but yea, lemme review tha dirty version. >>> Such a crazy hook wit you and your repetitiveness!! I went nuts when I played this shit on my radio show; would’ve neva thought I’d play it ‘cause of tha title but you know, I took chances on tha previous semester! Just luv how tha beat iz so continuous and doesn’t stop!! Hard ta believe you were only, like, 14 years-old when this was made! You’re hella crazy wit these lyrics, lol!!! My Rating: 4.7

03. “Charlie Whop!!”
Oh, God, lol! Played this on my radio show, and… >>> I went nuts, too!!! It was my gurl Alexia’s birthday show and I just went bananaz!!!!! Luv tha “Charlie Whop!!” intro; so hilarious, especially when you hold tha “whop!!” part!! :) Rhymes were better on tha “Dick” song but tha hook’s real crazy, here; wish I could hear it more… I do like tha “warriors” part, though; such a nice representation of tha 504! My Rating: 4.5

½time: Prolly tha best CD I’ve eva reviewed from a female; you fit right in wit tha previous reviewz I reviewed, which were by dudes, ya dig? A 4.6-rated CD, currently, and sadly, posthumously! :(

04. “Soldier Chant”
Neva got ta get this on my radio show, yet; lemme hear dis… >>> LOL, just a bunch of chantin’; you know I luv “chants”!! Eva since tha Early ’04 dayz!! I thought this was an interestin’ way of makin’ a track; strictly chantin’ tha whole way through wit a consistent beat!! My Rating: 4.3

05. “Magnolia Shorty” Feat. Juvenile & B.G.
I actually got ta radio-edit this song a month before you died. At first, I didn’t realize there were commercial features on it, but I wound up playin’ it! Now, lemme see what I say when I review it! >>> Anotha jammin’ beat fa you, here. Juvie’s comin’ through wit some consistent shit on tha 1st verse; feelin’ all tha shit he’s got goin’ on, here! Ooh, you hopped onto tha 2nd ½ of tha 1st verse, comin’ through wit some consistent rhymes, which are more serious than tha entertainin’ shit from before—then again, this still iz entertainin’… B.G.’s on tha next part? I guess there’s so much ta offer on tha 1st verse? Sounds pretty nice, especially wit tha gutta-ass perspective he has wit tha “duct-tape” shit and how he can resist anyone! Now that I hear tha hook again, I guess this was just only a one-verse song; good shit, all tha way, ya dig? My Rating: 4.4

R.I.P. Video #09: Magnolia Shorty

Recorded December 21, 2010

I'm standing here at tha cemetery by my house in Northeast Pennsylvania. It's FrankieThaLuckyDog here, reporting a tragic event that occurred throughout tha day December 20, 2010. Renetta Lowe, who was known in tha music business as rapper Magnolia Shorty, from New Orleans, Louisiana, was shot multiple times, resulting in a murder along with a mysterious man. The shooting happened close to 12:30 in the afternoon on Bridgehampton Drive, 6300 Block. Investigators say there were Seventh District officers receiving a phone call about a shooting going on. Once they arrived, both Lowe and the man were pronounced dead. As of right now, investigators are trying to solve this incident, looking for the murder and any evidence required.

Magnolia Shorty was signed to Cash Money Records during the early 90's. Thanx to Bryan "Baby" Williams and Ronald "Slim" Williams, who were the label's owners, Magnolia Shorty started to get recognized. She released her CD, Monkey On Tha Dick, in 1996, featuring New Orleans Bounce anthems. She was featured on Juvenile's Solja Rags album in 1997 and recently, she has collaborated with Jadakiss and Kourtney Heart. People from Curren$y, to Lil' Wayne, to Birdman, and even to New York's own Funkmaster Flex all tweeted about how much they were saddened about tha loss of Magnolia Shorty; she lived to be only 28.

Let's flashback and remember her music; moment of silence by watching tha video...
