Review #1,176: Lil' Phat "Never Use A Pen Again"

Reviewed on 9.12.2012 (Review #1,176)

My 3rd review for today iz for Trill Entertainment’s Lil’ Phat Never Use A Pen Again. I neva knew about this CD, surprisingly, ‘til his death; it even was on my “Tha Louisiana Pit” flyer that Big Roy made for me, and I must’ve not’ve noticed it… Anyway, because this CD was released way before his death, I will try and not make any references to him not bein’ alive. Start Time: 1:42 PM | End Time: 2:05 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you use tha word “swag” frequently, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes 100,000x (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it!

01. “Bet Dat Up”
>>> Tha beat sounds real nice, here; sounds kinda funny wit your voice, includin’ how you say tha title. Rhymes are good, here, wit how you “comin’” through… My Rating: 4.3

02. “I Been Known Fa”
>>> Length’s under three minutes, here; good to have some short songs, here and there. This sounds aight wit tha hook; beat almost gives me tha same vibe as tha previous song. Tha verses sound good wit all tha random shit you sayin’, here. My Rating: 4.0

03. “What Dey Gonna Do”
>>> Good vibe, once again; a lil’ slower, and tha hook’s okay, once again. Decent rhymes here, overall; not much I can say… My Rating: 3.8

04. “Talk Some Mo Shit” Feat. Mannie Fresh
>>> This ain’t too bad; why tha Kevin Gates “don’t know what ta call it” quote? Mannie Fresh sounds a lil’ cheesy, especially for his age, on his part… “Other”? What about “otha”? Don’t sound too white, lol… Tha hook’s a lil’ funny wit tha Too $hort “biatch” shit goin’ on… My Rating: 3.7

05. “I’m From The South”
>>> Huh? A DJ 5150 tag? Plus, tha volume’s much louder? Why tha different, inconsistent pattern? Tha hook iz catchy wit tha rap-sing pattern; at least you’re catchy wit it, unlike all tha shitty people today! Rhymes soundin’ good fa tha hood, here; not much ta say, once again… My Rating: 4.1

06. “Fuck Love”
>>> Now, a DJ? What’s goin’ on here? A lil’ soft wit tha beat; okay, but nothin’ too special. My Rating: 3.3

07. “Hustler”
>>> This iz a real catchy one; likin’ tha spelling on tha hook… Rhymes ain’t too bad, here; tha beat’s pretty nice, too… My Rating: 4.4

08. “It Won’t B Long”
>>> Lil’ Ken beat, or B-Real beat? Confused, but doesn’t this sound like a contradiction? I thought you were famous; weren’t you a one-hit wonder for bein’ featured on “Independent”? Aren’t famous people too ‘busy’ to answer people online? Either way, this sounds like a smooth track, overall. My Rating: 3.8

½time: A 3.9-rated CD, currently.

09. “I Be On Them Hoes”
>>> Not really for me, but your flow helps out wit tha catchiness… My Rating: 3.5

10. “Lord”
>>> Good lyrics; beat sounds good, too. My Rating: 3.9

11. “She Got It” Feat. Bobby V & Webbie
>>> Not too into Bobby V on tha hook; this iz okay, although I always feel that Bobby V gives tracks a summer vibe… Rhymes are aight, here… My Rating: 2.9

12. “Fuck Da World”
>>> Ooh, nice beat start! Feelin’ tha faster vibe, includin’ your middle finger perspective!! Good, quick joint! My Rating: 4.4

13. “Sickest Out The Click” Feat. C-Loc & DJ B-Real
Wow, DJ B-Real on tha feature? Love how he appears outta nowhere! >>> Hook sounds nice, wit whateva that sample iz… Gotta luv B-Real on tha hook; he can hold any joint down! Feelin’ tha gangsta vibe, here; good job, y’all! My Rating: 4.3

14. “On Da Top”
>>> I’m not really into samples; don’t think I’ll have too much interest wit this one… You sound a lil’ catchy wit how you deliverin’ this joint, although tha beat’s too East Coast-y for me… My Rating: 3.2

15. “Sideways”
>>> Now, this beat sounds too mainstream/ATLish… A lil’ catchy, although I can prolly hear someone else spit somethin’ similar to this… My Rating: 3.8

16. “What Kinda”
>>> Endin’ it wit a soft beat? A lil’ boring; not much interest wit these lyrics… My Rating: 2.8

Overall: Another decent CD for me; too bad your Never Use A Pen Again title really told tha truth. :(
