Review #1,391: Kevin Gates "By Any Means"

Reviewed on 3.19.2014 (Review #1,391)

Been havin’ a lotta luck wit job interviews, lately; very exciting and life-changing!! Got an official life-change date: Monday, March 24, 2014!! So, before it gets to then, lemme get some shit outta tha way! First up, a review for Kevin Gates, from dat Bread Winners Association, By Any Means; came outta nowhere, this CD… Start Time: 6:35 PM | End Time: 7:30 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you use tha word “swag” frequently, have auto-tune in your vocals, or talk about nothin’ but money and hoes 100,000x (which I consider ‘typical’ topics), I’m not buyin’ it! After I was robbed by an artist who claimed they “get money,” hearin’ about how much you “got money” and anything “money” really bothers me. If you have not done business wit me before, I won’t tolerate “money” talk in tha music!!

01. “Wish I Had It”
Allstar production. >>> A nice, southern start to tha beat, in my opinion. Catchy hook, here; I dunno about tha Future “Shit” / Migos “Ran Up The Money”-soundin’ 2nd ½ of tha hook-like flow wit tha “hustle, hustle, hustle, hustle,” or whateva… Anyway, tha 1st verse’s lyrics are okay, but I’m feelin’ tha delivery. Tha 2nd verse sounds nice; I dunno about usin’ Louisiana/Baton Rouge-like terms like “dumb shit” on this non-Louisiana style he now has. Seems like it blends in weird? Either way, nice job wit tha 2nd verse… I thought this was a nice and catchy way to start this CD off! My Rating: 4.4

02. “Don’t Know”
Knucklehead & Go Grizzly production. >>> Knucklehead, why a beat tag in tha beginning? When will people let go of that gay-ass trend of tha beat tags? It’s so outdated!! Anyway, tha beat sounds pretty nice; southern at its finest, for tha 2K14! Tha hook’s catchy, too, and must I stress: 28 and has a “daughter,” already? Either way, tha 1st verse’s catchy, between tha rhymes and beat. Tha 2nd verse sounds consistent; not too fast wit tha rappin’, and deliveries are drillin’ in you, each second at a time! Hearin’ tha hook again, and it sounds like you “know” too many non-negative things? I mean, c’mon, life’s not perfect! My Rating: 4.3

03. “Amnesia” Feat. Doe B
Looks like a good collaboration, includin’ that Dun Deal’s on tha track! This should be tha highlight of tha CD; let’s see if I’m right… >>> Anotha nice track by Dun Deal, here, once again, and tha hook’s catchy; almost sounded like an intro, at first. Couldn’t tell who was who, at first, but since that’s B on tha 1st verse, Tha lyrics are a lil’ more mainstream, as well as tha delivery; semi-wack, though semi-catchy. You on tha 2nd verse, and it sounds better; seems like you drill it in peoples’ brains better… I still thought this was pretty good, regardless… My Rating: 3.9

04. “Can’t Make This Up”
Dave Cappa beat, here… >>> I dunno if I can take you with you screamin’ tha title; sounds kinda awkward… Not really a fan of tha “started from tha bottom” to start a sentence/line off, either…; tha hook ain’t too bad, overall. Tha 1st verse has some mid-paced rhymes; lots of good shit on this beat, and I don’t mind… Tha 2nd verse’s kinda random, but good, at times… My Rating: 3.6

05. “Keep Fucking With Me” Feat. Plies
Yucky fake feature, here, so no anticipation…; V12 The Hitman beat. >>> Beat sounds good; a lil’ mainstream on tha production, here, and tha hook’s aight… Tha 1st verse’s you, and I like how you deliver these rhymes… Gross Plies on tha 2nd verse, here; W…H…A…T…E…V…A…! He paved tha way for fake rappers of my Louisiana connection’s start! No comment on his verse! My Rating: 3.1

06. “Homicide”
Chrishan beat. >>> Beat’s pretty nice; sounds like it has no identity as to what coast it belongs to, almost like a combination of ‘em all! Tha hook’s catchy, too, with how you deliver it… Here you are on tha 1st verse, and you lost someone? I’m still blessed that that’s neva happened to me, as far as people outside of tha family! Tha 2nd verse’s pretty nice; definitely feelin’ your “drug-related” verse, as well as tha grimy-delivering voice of yours! My Rating: 4.3

07. “Movie”
Beewirks beat. >>> Beat intro has a lil’ bit of that Ellie Goulding “Burn” sound effect in it; sounds good… Hearin’ you on tha 1st verse, and it sounds good; sounds like some travelin’ goin’ on… Kinda startin’ to get boring when it’s a continuous verse, here… Finally, tha title around 1:53…; decent. What’s with tha birthdayz? “December, tha 18th,” huh? Remember, Gates: I have Asperger’s, so I remember everyone’s birthdayz! What’s with all tha “dick” shit, toward tha end? My Rating: 3.5

08. “Go Hard” Feat. Rico Love
I was gonna say, why no Louisiana features, though this iz one, even though he ain’t underground. Jim Jonsin, Finatick & Zac (for Rebel Rock) doin’ tha production; three producers? Looks like an EDM explosion… >>> A pretty good song, here, though not really for me. Tha beat’s good, but this belongs on Music Choice—tha mainstream, or somethin’. Nice mainstream hook, Mr. Love. Here you are on tha 1st verse, with your mixed-up, catchy flow and lyrics… I have to dig when you make tha rhymes sound like a conversation. Tha 2nd verse sounds aight; kinda sounds like it has a mix of a mainstream vibe, vs. some dirty lyrics, at times. Goin’ real downhill with Rico rappin’ on tha 3rd verse? Had no idea he rapped, but it’s wack!! Not feelin’ tha “money” shit, as well as tha typical, Ross-like delivery! Could’ve barely cracked a 3 fa me, but it’s gonna be closer to a 2, now, because of that verse! My Rating: 2.1

½time: A good CD, so far; tha production, for mainstream producers, iz pretty nice, too. Of course, nowhere near memorable as your Louisiana past, and your CD rating’s a 3.7, currently.

09. “Bet I’m On It” Feat. 2 Chainz
Another big-name producer, with The Honorable C-Note on tha beat. No DJ B-Real beat or somethin’? What happened to tha undaground, Louisiana producers? Either way, I think I gon anticipate this, but I dunno if I’m 100% ready to put underground, Louisiana rap back on my playlist, just yet… >>> Sounds okay, so far; catchy hook from tha both of y’all, as well as this beat. You’re on tha 1st verse, and I’m likin’ tha drug shit, as well as bein’ “on tha court.” Consistent rhymes, non-stop! I don’t get it: 2 Chainz charges $100,000 for his features; if you got this, then, you had $100,000. How come you’re a “money virgin” wit doin’ business wit me? Neva did any business wit you, though I sent you awards, had you post my All Or Nuthin’ review on MySpace, and you even retweeted me… Weird, but you’re missin’ out! Anyway, 2 Chainz on tha 2nd verse, and it’s a pretty good verse; of course, I enjoy it. I like tha 4th ¼ of it, with tha “Boosie” and all that shit that sounded similar to tha “Boosie” part; definitely catchy! And, this beat sounds great wit that hook, once again! Gotta luv when 2 Chainz comes outta nowhere with, “This ain’t no muthafuckin’ leash; I bet I’m on it!” Also, nice beat outro, too! My Rating: 4.5

10. “Arm & Hammer”
The Runners & The Monarch on tha track, here… >>> Sounds pretty nice for tha production and these long-lost producers, too! Looks like tha 2nd ½ of this CD’s off to a great start! Definitely a nice hook, here, wit tha drug content, as well as how hard you come through on tha beat, here! Tha 1st verse sounds good, here… I’m feelin’ how tha drug content continues, as you’re stayin’ on topic! Tha 2nd verse sounds good, too; can’t complain wit how you keep this content on-n-poppin’! My Rating: 4.4

11. “‘Posed To Be In Love”
Looks like a good title, but can be cheesy for me… Go Grizzly on tha beat. >>> Sounds good, like a “Stoner” beat start, warped in tha background… A catchy start to—okay, tha hook; has a street vibe, but izn’t mainstream, female-like, like tha Rico Love feature. Tha 1st verse’s aight; it’s okay, though you deliver these rhymes good. Tha 2nd verse’s pretty nice, too; pretty good, overall, here. My Rating: 3.7

12. “Stop Lyin’”
Anotha Dun Deal beat! >>> Wow, I’m really feelin’ tha beat start, here!! And, it sounds pretty nice on tha hook, too!! Catchy voice of yours on tha hook, and I like how tha beat kicks a lot, before tha hook ends!! And, here’s your true voice, on tha 1st verse, comin’ through wit some female-dedicated rhymes; I’m feelin’ ‘em, here… Most of tha songs have been two-verse songs; this one’s 4:22; let’s hope it hangs in there with my interest… Consistent, though okay rhymes on tha 2nd verse, here; let’s keep it goin’… Well, no 3rd verse; instead, a quick bridge… I think tha 2 Chainz collab deserves to be on top? Well, it’s gonna be close… My Rating: 4.5

13. “Wit It”
Big Soj & Kane Beatz on tha beat, here; Big Soj iz from We Got Hits… >>> Still on tha “love” tip? This sounds okay, but my interest ain’t near as it was for tha previous song! Tha 1st verse sounds okay… Ehh, my interest iz low, here. Ewe, when you said, “Please,” on tha 2nd verse, it reminded me of Rihanna, and how she said that in “Take A Bow”, from six years ago. LOL, really? “Like Master P, there’s no limit;” kinda cheesy… My Rating: 3.3

14. “Just Want Some Money”
DJ Yung Stylez beat; you broke, now, accordin’ to this title? Not feelin’ tha title, here, so no anticipation… >>> Beat tags get boring; why have ‘em? Thought that was an ’06 thang…? Hearin’ tha 1st verse, and you sound good on it; at least you admittin’ that you been “broke,” at times. Tha hook’s pretty distorted with you in tha background, here…; a lil’ catchy. Well, tha 2nd ½ of it’s boring; fuck “money!” It’s homosexual! I like how you said, “Roof,” when you said, “Tha drug habit through tha roof!” Nice 2nd verse, here, and it’s even 4:05… Well, sounds like a long outro? Hearin’ you broadcast this fa these “pussy niggaz,” or somethin’… And now, before tha 3:00 mark, it sounds like you on tha phone? A part of me likes it ‘cause you sound like you’re in a submarine, though I think you’re in jail; I keep forgettin’ that you were originally locked up, again. My Rating: 3.4

15. “Again”
Bricks Da Mane on tha beat; sounds like a nice drug name for tha producer’s name, so I’m expectin’ a trap anthem! >>> Yea, it has a trap anthem-like feel; good mainstream beat, and tha hook’s pretty nice! “I can’t wait to shit on all my friends, again;” right, Gates? You gotta physically “shit” on rappers! I’ve done it, before, but I also used to do it to bullies! I dunno if it’s cheesy, or catchy, but I like tha “Hold on, lemme get my phone on” part, before tha 1st verse ended. Consistent-soundin’ rhymes on tha 2nd verse, strictly punchin’ ‘em in peoples’ minds! My Rating: 4.0

16. “Get Up On My Level”
Yung Carter on tha beat; how we gon end this off? >>> Sounds like R&B for tha start; lack of anticipation, now… Ahh, this iz 4:16, too? Bet this gon be too long fa me… Hearin’ tha 1st verse, and I’m not really into this flow, wit tha “can’t see you niggaz” shit repeatin’… Tha hook’s kinda boring wit tha repetitive title… Tha same shit’s goin’ on in tha 2nd verse, too; ugh! Jeez, it’s worse, now that you keep sayin’, “Like Stevie Wonder;” what’s next? A 3rd verse, here, and now, street rhymes about “every rapper in Louisiana to make it.” Finally, tha annoying flow’s gone, but whateva, my interest didn’t recapture itself… My Rating: 2.3

Overall: I thought this was good, at times. Not too much bad shit for me, here, but I guess this goes down as a decent review. I dunno what else to say, but I guess, keep grindin’, Gates.
