Review #228: 781 "Lay'n Back N Da Smokehouse"

Reviewed on 6.01.2009 (Review #228)

Ya boy FrankieThaLuckyDog iz back, yet hoppin' back in my Louisiana Reviewz Marathon. Speaking of Louisiana, shout out to my boy Beezy Bird fa writin' me a MySpace message earlier today; it was unexpected, yet I was really appreciated that he discovered me! Now, I gon enter tha Louisiana era of 1994 wit tha 1st of 27 CDs/tapes from 1994: 781 "Lay'n Back N Da Smokehouse"! Start Time: 5:19 PM | End Time: 6:09 PM

Disclaimer: I rate each song from 1.0 – 5.0; each rating iz my own opinion! I only please myself wit my ratings! I don’t care how lyrical you are, as long as it’s jammin’ enough for me to like it! I look for beats, then vocals, and then lyrics. To determine my favorites, I will differ tha 4.0 ratings. If a song gets at least a 4.0 rating from me, I love it already. If at least a 4.6 rating, I pretty much really love it, as it’s considered mindblowin’ when I hear it! Any song can earn up to a maximum of a 5.0 rating. Anything I type before “ >>> ” iz what I’m sayin’ before I listen to tha song; anything after I type “ >>> ” iz what I think of tha song while I’m listening to it. If you sound like anything too mainstream for me or have auto-tune in your vocals, I’m not buyin’ it!

01. "Smoke House (Intro)"
I like tha front cover, so now, I'm gonna feel like I'm goin' into it wit this intro! Lookin' forward to this CD!! >>> Although I'm hating tha breeze outside on Long Island, NY right now, I'm feelin' tha breeze in tha beginning of this intro, lol! Really luvin' tha slow-ass beat wit tha screwed-type vocals too! Tha intro may feel long, but no, it goes GREAT! 2:30 iz a nice length fa an intro without any rappin' as well. GREAT intro that put me in a GREAT mood ta hear this CD!! My Rating: N/A

02. "In Da Chamber"
Anotha TIGHT title, and I'm REALLY lookin' forward ta hearin' this shit!! >>> Tha style reminds me of UGK right now (old skool). Nice style, and great rhymes in tha 1st verse; like tha "cra-zy" part at 1:10. Tha 2nd verse iz good too; tha dude iz doin' a great job deliverin' that undaground shit. A lil' bit of a Jamaican style towards tha bridge, lol. Ooh, a 3rd verse here, startin' off pretty good (like tha 1st verse). Feelin' this shit here, especially at 4:15, where tha rhymes DO "get harder and harder," as well as tha "gremlin" part! LOL @ tha Jamaican part towards tha end too; I like his "puffin' weed" part though. My Rating: 4.1

03. "Smooth With Da Roughness"
I looked at tha length of this CD, and fa it to be 40+ minutes fa only 9 songs (one bein' an intro), I'm expectin' all these songs ta pretty much be 5+ minutes; that's watz good. Lemme hear this one! >>> Nice smooth joint here. Not much to say, but it's nice and (like tha title of tha CD) "lay'n back" type style. Tha "R.I.P." part around tha 1:40 mark was interesting ta hear; likin' tha 2nd verse dude's flow. Tha 3rd verse wasn't that bad... LOL @ tha Jamaican style again. It's like, did Kevin Gates get an influence from this? I prolly don't think he did, but that's what it reminds me of. My Rating: 3.7

04. "People Dyin' Again"
Oh no... This should be a good song though (sorry to hear about tha "people" in this one)! >>> A Marley type of start... Good rappin' in tha 1st verse, and that Jamaican/Marley type of hook iz catchy. Let's hear tha 2nd verse... Interesting song; likin' tha "I used ta slang shit" part. That's a strong ending to tha 2nd verse wit "it's all about survival; let ya nuts hang." Ooh, more slangin' in tha 3rd verse wit "slangin' quarters." Tha 3rd verse held it down on this one! My Rating: 4.0

½time: This CD I thought was gonna be slightly better, yet more to tha title (about smokin') wit anthems about smokin'. Either way, I'm enjoyin' tha shit, so it gets a thumbs up from me! I wonder what's left wit this CD...

05. "Big Niggaz"
I like tha title again!! Hope it's a REAL GOOD one fa me!! >>> Not bad on tha beat start wit tha background sample. Good 1st verse, and interesting to hear about tha dude. I'm likin' tha dude on tha 2nd verse too; he soundin' good on this shit. Tha "only 13" shit about who's bein' talked about on tha 2nd verse iz interesting ta hear! Good 3rd verse too. Likin' tha rappin' and all tha lyrics! Sad ending about tha "gettin' shot" part. I liked this joint right here. My Rating: 4.2

06. "Hustler In My Ghetto"
Even longer song (6:16 on tha length)! I wonder how this one gon sound!? >>> Sounds kinda depressing (in tha beat) fa a start... Real interesting lyrics wit what a "hustler" iz like "in your ghetto." Great 1st verse. Nice start to tha 2nd verse, no less sayin' "Louisiana" and tha "swishas" part. Definitely liked tha 2nd verse on this shit! Now, we got tha 3rd verse at 3:18 here... Oh no, anotha dude that "dropped outta high school," even though it was "in order to make a quick buck." Kinda short verse, but it did a nice job too. Let's see tha 4th verse... Sounds like a sad start wit tha "got shot" part. I must LOL @ "wear each other's clothes;" that's like my brother, lol. Not bad on tha 4th verse. I thought wit tha extended length that this could've had a 5th verse, but no, it's an extended hook wit tha beat ridin' out. Not bad of a song, yet great verses. My Rating: 3.8

07. "Holler At Me"
Gonna peep out this one and see what it sounds like... >>> Sounds like a good, West Coast start. I like tha "blunt in my lap" part in tha 1st verse; 1st verse soundin' good. Tha hook iz definitely good and catchy; great song here! Tha 2nd verse here iz soundin' great too! A "Magnolia" trip as that's what dude on tha 2nd verse iz doin' right now ("goin' to tha Magnolia"). Once again, good job on tha 2nd verse. Tha 3rd verse sounds more like a clubbish theme. Tha rest of it kept it to tha club style, and tha ending here (at 4:07) iz bringin' tha Jamaican style in again, lol. My Rating: 4.3

08. "Gangsta Groovin'"
This looks like it gon sound like that West Coast type of style that I heard in tha last song... >>> Sounds more like tha lay'd back, West Coast style. I like tha "rollin' up a blunt" part while in "tha car." Relaxin' rappin' on tha 1st verse, as well as tha hook too. Tha 2nd verse addin' sum "gun play" attributes to tha verse while keepin' tha vocals nice and relaxin'; good shit. Tha 3rd verse kept it consistent wit tha otha verses on this shit. Again, anotha Jamaican ending, lol. My Rating: 3.9

09. "Smoke House"
Ending it LONG wit 6:17 on tha length this time, lol! I wonder how this gon be fa an ending!? >>> Okay, this iz nice and lay'd back wit MORE towards tha "weed smokin'" topic, so thumbs up! Did I hear somethin' like "smoke weed like ...boogers," lol? Still, it sounded good. Really luvin' tha smokin' here, huh, lol? Tha 2nd verse iz soundin' pretty good too. I liked tha 1st verse better though. On tha 3rd verse here, it soundin' like it's keepin' it real wit tha topic still. Nice job on tha 3rd verse. Tha 4th verse iz soundin' pretty good too on this shit; nice job wit these verses! My Rating: 4.4

Overall: Well, I was definitely into this CD right chea! Great start to tha year 1994 fa me, and I was feelin' tha rappin', tha lyrics, tha rhymes, pretty much everything. Keep doin' y'all (if y'all still around)!
